1. وأكلف منْسَرُهُ ذو شغا

    كعطفةِ رأس السنان الذّليق

    His graceful neck adorned with bells

    Like the nape of a delicate doe

  2. له مُقْلَةٌ كُحِلَتْ بالنّجيع

    تُصَرِّفُ إيماضَ لحظٍ صدوق

    With kohl-lined eyes that glance coquettishly

    Turning with each charming blink

  3. كَأنّ بجؤجؤهِ مُهْرَقاً

    مُوَشّىً بِأَحرُفِ خَطٍّ دقيق

    As if its pupil were embroidered

    With fine delicate script

  4. يصيدُ بكفٍّ خطاطيفها

    مركبةٌ في وظيفٍ وثيق

    It catches butterflies in its palm

    Perched atop its duty steadfast

  5. يباكر بالصيد سربَ القطا

    وبَينَهُماْ كلّ فجٍّ عميق

    Pouncing on the flock of grouse

    Over each deep ravine between them

  6. ويُصْبحُ سربَ الحَمامِ الحِمامُ

    ويَجْنَحُ مثلَ الجناح الخفوق

    And the flock of doves take wing at dawn

    Flapping like rustling wings

  7. كأنَّ عقاباً على أفقه

    ترود الوغى يوم ريح خريق

    As if a hawk above the horizon

    Swooping down on a windy day

  8. ولمّا انجلى اللَّيلُ واستوضَحَتْ

    له غُرّةُ الصبح في رأس نيق

    When the night cleared and first light appeared

    Dawn's glow tipped its elegant head

  9. فباتَ ولا خوفَ في نفسه

    بِهِمَّتِه حازَ بيْضَ الأنوق

    It slept without fear in its heart

    By its resolve it won precious eggs

  10. وقلّبَ والفتكُ في نفسه

    حماليق مثلَ ائتلاق البروق

    And turned danger over in its thoughts

    Like flashing sparks of lightning

  11. وقد نَفَضَ الطلَّ عن منكبيه

    بمثل انتفاضِ الطمرِّ العتيق

    Dew rolled off its shoulders

    Like crumbling ancient ruins

  12. ترى ريشَهُ فوْقَ أرجائهِ

    طِراقاً كمثل حباب الرّحيق

    Its feathers above its limbs

    Are like misty drops of perfume

  13. رَأى مَا رَأى وبريق الشعاعِ

    يكحلُ أجفانَهُ بالشروق

    It saw what it saw, and the rays of light

    Lined its eyes with the rising sun

  14. وأيْقَنَ بالسوءِ من صيده

    فَدلَّ على سَبجٍ بالعَقيق

    And sensed the danger to its catch

    So it showed the ruby nest

  15. وحَلَّق وانقضَّ من جَوِّهِ

    كما صُوّبَتْ حجرُ المنجَنيق

    And swooped from the air

    As a catapulted stone

  16. فَتَحسَبُه عِندَ إِقعاصِها

    يَشُقُّ حيازيمَها عَن شَقيق

    You'd think as it pounced

    It tore its ribs from their mooring
