1. أبكاهُ شيبُ الرأسِ لما ابتسمْ

    وعادَهُ في السقم طيفٌ ألَمّ

    My hoary head made me weep when it smiled,

    And my phantom pain returned when I fell ill,

  2. من غادةٍ في وصل هجرانها

    يَقْنَعُ منها بوصالِ الحُلُم

    Of a love lost in her abandonment,

    He contents himself with her love in dreams,

  3. صَوّرَ منها شَوْقُهُ صورةً

    في فكرةٍ ساهرةٍ لم تَنَم

    His yearning pictured her image

    In a wakeful thought that did not sleep,

  4. فالقلبُ يُذكي جذوةً تلتظي

    والعينُ تُذْري عَبْرَةً تنسجم

    So the heart rekindles an ember that flares,

    And the eye sheds copious tears that harmonize,

  5. غيداءُ تاجُ الحسنِ من غيرها

    يُضحي لديها وهو نَعْلُ القدم

    Radiant Ghidaa is the crown of beauty without equal,

    For her he sacrifices though he is but a slipper’s strap,

  6. أثمرَ بالرّمّان من قَدّها

    غضْنٌ ومن أطرَافها بالعَنَم

    Her stature produced a sprout in pomegranate,

    And from her limbs a tendril in grapes,

  7. لمياءُ تبدي الدّر من أشْنَبٍ

    يحرق بالأنوار جُنْحَ الظُّلَم

    The brilliance of Lamiya reveals pearls from anklets,

    That burn with lights the wings of darkness,

  8. يُبْرِدُ حرّ الشوْق ترشافُهُ

    عنكَ بمعسولِ الثنايا شَبم

    The chill of longing is cooled by her saliva’s sweetness,

    It calls you to it with a mark and scent,

  9. كأنّما برقٌ ومسكٌ به

    إليه يدعوك بِشَيمٍ وَشمّ

    The dawn in its rise defeats,

    And the night in its setting is defeated,

  10. والصبحُ في مشرقه هازمٌ

    والليلُ في مغربه منهزم

    I see people’s differing mad for hunting,

    Some Arabic and some Persian,

  11. أرى اختلافَ الناس دانوا به

    في صيدِ عُرْبٍ منهم أو عجم

    And Ali's son Hassan a lord and master,

    Without contention amongst all nations,

  12. وابنُ عليّ حسنٌ سيّدٌ

    بلا خلافٍ في جميع الأمم

    Empowered in his grip a bare blade,

    With it he bolstered the faith of guidance and took refuge,

  13. مُملَّكٌ في كفّه صارم

    عزّ به دينُ الهدى واعتصم

    From his palm he disperses benevolence,

    And thereby maintains composed unity,

  14. مُبَدِّدُ المعروف من كفّه

    وللعلى شملٌ به منتظم

    When he says “yes” the executor is generous, so rejoice at the attainment of bounty,

    And discerning of limits when asked,

  15. مُنفّذُ الأمرِ كريمٌ إذا

    قالَ نعم فابْشِرْ بنيلِ النّعم

    He surges towards striking the hills and flames,

    With it he seizes the zebra's head plucking,

  16. وَمُرْهَفِ الحدّ إذا سَلّهُ

    سال إلى ضرب الطلى واضطرم

    As the omission of the soft letter conclusively,

    He maneuvers the spear along its length,

  17. يخطفُ رأسَ الذِّمْرِ قطفاً به

    كَحذفِ حرف اللين جزماً بلم

    As if it were a pen being maneuvered,

    If he threatens death with his hands,

  18. يصرّفُ الرمحَ على طوله

    كأنّما صُرّفَ منه قلم

    The full moon hides from him in the darkness,

    With it those lost in their night are guided,

  19. لئن همى من راحتيه الحيا

    فالبدرُ منه يحتَبي بالديم

    The fire brandishing the torch’s head kindled,

    Hopes kiss his hand,

  20. يُهْدَى به ضَلّ في ليله

    تَوَقُّدَ النارِ برأسِ العلم

    Which for all mouths is outstretched,

    With Allah he is victorious in his war,

  21. تُقَبِّلُ الآمالُ منه يداً

    فهي لأفواه الوَرَى مُستَلَم

    From his enemies, the avenger for Allah,

    In his spacious abode is the heaven of highness,

  22. منتصرٌ باللّه في حربه

    للّه من أعدائه منتقم

    Rising stars of ambitions,

    How many blows his sword landed,

  23. في رَبْعِهِ الرحبِ سماءُ العلى

    طوالعٌ فيها نجومُ الهمم

    It is an eloquent tongue and they a mouth,

    The steeds of turmoil trot around him,

  24. كم ضربةٍ أوسعها سيفُهُ

    فهو لسانٌ ناطقٌ وهي فم

    Stallions black as the darkest night,

    O you whom we found generosity in your expenditure,

  25. تعدو سرَاحينُ الوَغَى حَوْلَهُ

    مُجَلِّحاتٍ بأسودِ الأجَم

    Fulfilling hopes and ending despair,

    You remained in rule to protect the sublime,

  26. يا من وجدنا الجودَ من بذله

    مِلءَ الأماني وعدمنا العدم

    And champion the faith and shepherd promises,

  27. بقيتَ في الملك لِصَوْنِ العلى

    ونصرةِ الدين ورَعيِ الذمم
