1. رمى الموتُ في عين التصَبّرِ بالدّمِ

    وقال لحسن الصبر بين الحشا دُمِ

    Death cast spears into the eyes of endurance

    And said to the beauty of patience amid calamities, "Shed tears!"

  2. على القائد الأعلى الذي فُلّ عزمه

    كما فُلّ عن ضرب الطلى حَدُّ مخذمِ

    Upon the supreme commander whose resolve was broken

    Just as the edge of a polished sword is broken

  3. أرى زَمَنَ الدنْيا يُنَقِّلُ أهلها

    إلى دار أخرى من غنيّ ومعدمِ

    I see the time of this world moving its inhabitants

    To another abode, some wealthy and some destitute

  4. وَخَانَ أمينَ الملك فيما انطوى له

    على حفظِ أسرار الجلال المكتَّمِ

    And the trusted guardian of the kingdom betrayed what was entrusted to him

    To keep the secrets of the veiled majesty hidden

  5. وصادره الحتفُ الذي حَطّهُ إلى

    حشا القبر عن صَدرِ الخميس العرَمرَمِ

    So fate that cast him down into the grave

    Snatched him from the chest of auspicious Thursday

  6. وما شاءَهُ ذو العرشِ جلّ جلالُهُ

    يدقّ وَيَخفَى عن خفيّ التوَهَّمِ

    What the Lord of the Throne, may His majesty be glorified, willed

    Is subtle and hidden from the most penetrating imagination

  7. فما دَفَعَتْ عنه جنودُ جنودِهِ

    على أنّها في القرب كاليد للفمِ

    His armies did not ward it off though they were near as a hand to a mouth

    Nor did the blows of every sharp sword or piercing blades help him

  8. ولم يُغنِ عنها الضرْبُ من كلّ مرْهَفٍ

    ولا نافذاتُ الطعنِ من كلّ لهذمِ

    At the hands of brave warriors, each challenger

    Defending his protection and seeking refuge

  9. بأيدي كماةٍ منهمُ كلُّ مُقْدِمٍ

    بإقْدامِهِ يحمي حِماهُ ويحتمي

    Attacking spiritedly in the manner of Persian cavalry

    Speaking of the heroes of 'Aad and Jurhum

  10. ويُقْبِلُ في فضفاضةٍ فارسيّةٍ

    تحدِّثُ عن أبطالِ عادٍ وجُرْهُمِ

    'Ali ibn Hamdun, whose praise

    Lifted the ambitions of the eloquent speaker

  11. عليّ بن حمدون الذي كان حَمْدُهُ

    تُرَفَّعُ منه همّةُ المتكلمِ

    On the day of calamity, all troops deserted him

    Though many had lived long under his protection

  12. خَلَتْ منه يوْمَ الرّوْع كلّ كتيبةٍ

    وكم عَمِرَتْ من بأسِهِ بالتقدّمِ

    As if the perfumes of aloeswood

    Had purified the air around him from any foul smell

  13. كأنّ عَلَيها للعجاج مُلاءَةً

    مُطَيّرَةً في الجوّ من كلّ قشعمِ

    Whenever the excited camels met him, they saw

    In his attack, teeth that smiled

  14. متى تعبسِ الهيجا لهُ في لقائِهِ

    رأتْ منه في الإقحامِ سِنَّ تبسمِ

    He moved from the saddle of leadership with his demise

    To a grave amidst the darkness of a narrow coffin

  15. تَنَقّلَ من سرجِ الكميّ بحتْفِهِ

    إلى حفرةٍ في جوفِ لحدٍ مُسَنَّمِ

    And how many honored with glory on a dais

    Come to a crumbled ruin of a lofty house

  16. وكم مُكْرَمٍ بالعزِّ فَوْقَ أريكةٍ

    يصيرُ إلى بيت العلى المتهدّمِ

    And how much generosity poured from his right hand

    To the hands of the destitute and the forbidden

  17. وكم كرمٍ تنهلّ جدوى يمينه

    لأيدي عفاةٍ من مُحِلّ ومحرمِ

    As if the clear sky on the day of his generosity

    Was clouded with the gloom of thick clouds

  18. كأنّ صفَاءَ الجوّ يوْمَ عَطائِهِ

    مشوبٌ بشؤبوب الغمام المديّمِ

    So I sought refuge in the shadow of a wing

    In the wilderness of darkness amidst the gloom

  19. فَظُلّلْتُ منه في تَوحّشِ غُرْبَةٍ

    بظلّ جناح بين غبراءَ مظلمِ

    And the breast of wishes suckled me until I was

    Like a newborn come to the old civilization

  20. وأرضَعَني ثَدْيَ المنى فكأنّني

    وليدٌ أتى عمرانَ شيخ التقدمِ

    I did not refuse his generosity except escorted

    By the grace of the Bountiful and Generous Benefactor

  21. وما أبْتُ عن جدواهُ إلا مُشَيَّعَاً

    بإفْضالِ ذي فضْلٍ وإنعام منعمِ

    O Master whom we visited alive and dead

    He always possessed this magnificent essence

  22. فيا سيّداً زُرْناهُ حيّاً وميّتاً

    فما زَالَ في هذا الجنابِ المعظمِ

    We repeat greetings of love to you

    Even if you did not reciprocate the Muslim's greeting

  23. نردّد تسليماً عليك محبّةً

    وإن كنتَ لم تَرْدُدْ سلامَ المسلّمِ

    He whose heartbeats at the ruins pulverize rocks

    Seeking rain without Him is like one who performs tayammum and misses water

  24. وذي خفقات بالقرى تسحق الحصى

    لهنَّ اجتراء من حديد التحدّمِ

    His aura emanates from his cheerful countenance

    Good tidings for the optimist

  25. وراجي النّدى من غيره كمعوَّضٍ

    من الماءِ إذ صلّى ترابَ التيمّمِ

    That human was a giver of good news

    Of the greatest hopes and most abundant spoils

  26. ويبدي علاهُ من أسرّةِ وجهه

    سناءَ نسيم الخير للمتوسّمِ

    He always inclined towards righteousness and piety

    A pure hearted protector from every sin

  27. وقد كان ذاك البشرُ منه مُبَشّراً

    بأكْبَرِ مأمولٍ وأوفرِ مَغْنَمِ

    He moved while honored by his Lord

    To a Garden wherein he has an abode of dignity

  28. وما زال ميالاً إلى البرّ والتّقى

    تقيّ نقيّ القلب من كلّ مأثمِ

    Every association has dignity without any undignified

    Utterance about him from the silent

  29. تنَقّلَ والإكرامُ من ربّه له

    إلى جَنّةٍ فيها له دار مكرمِ

    He forgives the offender with his forgiving nature

    And shows composure in anger with clenched teeth

  30. له كلّ نادٍ بالوقار مُكَرَّمٌ

    بغيرِ وقورٍ منه مِقْوَلُ أبكمِ

    A school whose students are its jurists

    Including scholars and students

  31. وَصَفْحٌ عن الجاني بشيمةِ صَفْحِهِ

    وَحِلْمٌ حكى في الغيظِ هضْبَ يلملمِ

    Lights in the brave army, and their horsemen in war

    Are from every sharp sword

  32. ومدرسةٌ أبناؤها فُقَهاؤها

    فَمِنْ عالمٍ منهمْ وَمِنْ متعلّمِ

    He worked to support the Divine Law

    Clarifying the truth that satisfies every Muslim

  33. ضراغمُ في الجيش اللهامِ وإنّما

    فوارسُهُمْ في الحرب من كلّ ضيَغمِ

    I see the commander of commanders surrendered his reins

    To the judgment of a decisive decree in the wild

  34. وقد كان في نصر الشريعة مُشْرعاً

    عن الحقّ ما يَشْفي به كلَّ مُسْلمِ

    And surrendered himself to the destined end

    Though no ladder reached his lofty summit

  35. أرى قائدَ القوّادِ أعطى مَقَادَهُ

    لحكم قضاءٍ في البرايا محكَّمِ

    When the King secretly signaled him

    You would see him rise with forbidden haste

  36. وأسْلَمَ للحتْفِ المقدَّرِ نَفْسَهُ

    وقد كان لا يرقى إليه بِسُلّمِ

    His opinions target goals like

    The bolts of arrows target their aims

  37. إذا المَلْك ناجاه بِوحْيِ إشارة

    رأيتَ له نَهْضَ العقابِ المحرّمِ

    And his conquering hand that assaults the enemies

    Surrenders to the blessed, determined palm

  38. فتستهدِفُ الأغراضَ آراؤهُ كما

    تُقَرْطِسُ أغراضاً صوائبُ أسهمِ

    O sons, are you chiefs' aides?

    You are all honored and sons of the honored

  39. وتهدي له كفُّ تصولُ على العدا

    إلى كفّ ميمون المضاءِ المصمّم

    You are swords whose sharp edges make other swords blunt

    And your oaths in them are sealed

  40. أأبناؤهُ أنْتمْ سراة أكابرٍ

    فكلكمُ من مُكْرَمٍ وابن مكرمِ

    A beautiful consolation for this affliction, for you

    Are sweet-hearted mountains, nay rising stars

  41. وأنتم سيوفٌ للسيوف مواضياً

    وأيمانكم فيها ذوات تَخَتّمِ

    May your organized unity in honor persist

    And the unity of enemies be disorganized

  42. عزاءٌ جميل في المصاب فإنّكم

    جبالُ حلومٍ بل طوالعُ أنجمِ

  43. فدامَ لكمْ في العزّ شملٌ منظَّمٌ

    وشَمْلُ الأعادي منه غير منظَّمِ
