And a hand brings forth brides in praise—
—of you, among pens and scrolls.
So hear them from me—sweeter and more delectable
than hearing ramal and hazaj measures—
with meanings whose incense smells sweet to you,
and whose flatulence is in al-Zajjaj’s beard.
It shaved, in the long odes, Jarir’s chin,
and, in rajaz verse, al-Ajjaj’s beard.
