1. أبا الحسين الزمان ذو دولٍ

    أسبابها عند علة العللِ

    O Abu al-Husayn, Time is a thing of turns,

    whose causes lie with the Cause of causes.

  2. والعيش كالصاب في مرارته

    طوراً وطوراً أحلى من العسلِ

    Life, in its bitterness, is like ṣāb,

    then, by turns, sweeter than honey.

  3. ودار هذي الحياة مذ بنيت

    لم تخل من ساكن ومنتقلِ

    Since this dwelling of life was built,

    it has never lacked one who stays and one who departs.

  4. والناس في طيبهم ونتنهم

    ضدان مثل التفاح والبصل

    People, in their fragrance and their stench,

    are opposites, like apples and onions.

  5. وهم مليحٌ وأخر وحشٌ

    ما بين رامشةٍ إلى جعل

    Among them is one fair, and another a brute,

    ranging from a fluttering-lashed beauty to a dung beetle.

  6. فوجه هذا للسيف وحشته

    ووجه ذاك المليح للقبل

    This one’s face, for its ugliness, is fit for the sword;

    that fair one’s face is made for kisses.

  7. وليس هذا وقت الخطاب على

    جرايةٍ تقتضي ولا عمل

    This is no time to hold forth about

    a stipend to be claimed, or any work.

  8. الوقت وقت الأركال تعملها

    ما بين ثاني الثقيل والرمل

    Now is the time for dance-steps, performed

    to thaqīl al-thānī and ramal,

  9. وقحبةٍ تبلع القضيب ولا

    تعجبها غيره من الحمل

    and for a whore who swallows the cock and

    delights in bearing no other load.

  10. فابعث بقصيةٍ تحدثنا

    عن حرب صفين أو عن الجمل

    So send along a tale to tell us

    of the battle of Ṣiffīn or of the Camel—

  11. غزيرة الورد إن بي ظمأ

    لا يرتوي من صبابة الوشل

    copious in its flow, for I am thirsty,

    not to be quenched by a mere trickle of union.

  12. ولا تجادل أخاك معتذراً

    فلست ممن يقول بالجدل

    And do not argue with your brother, making excuses;

    I am not one of those who deals in disputation.
