سمعت فيمن مات أو من بقي

بمقبلٍ بوابه أعورُ

I heard among those who died or lived on

A one-eyed doorman at their door

واللوزة المرة يا سيدي

يفسد في الطعم بها السكر

And the bitter almond, my lord

Spoils with it the taste of sugar
