My conversation with you has been long

So do you have time for long conversations?

وجملة ما يعبره مقالي

حصول استي على حر المقالي

And all that my speech expresses

Is my desire for honest speech

وأني بين قومٍ ليس فيهم

فتى ينهى إلى الملك اختلالي

And that I am among a people in whom

There is no young man to correct my mistakes

فلحمي ليس تطبخه قدوري

وحوتي ليس تقليه المقالي

So my meat, no pots cook it

And my whale, no pans fry it

ومائي قد خلت منه جبابي

وخبزي قد خلت منه سلالي

And my water, my waterskins are empty of it

And my bread, my provisions are devoid of it

وكيسي الفارغُ المطروح خلفي

بعيدُ العهد بالقطع الحلال

And my empty discarded bag behind me

Long estranged from lawful sustenance

أفكر في مقامي وهو صعبٌ

وأصعب منه عن وطني ارتحالي

I think of my difficult situation

And more difficult than it, is leaving my homeland

فبي مرضان مختلفان حالي ال

عليلة منهما تمسي بحال

So I have two conflicting illnesses besetting me

Sickened by both, I end the day

إذا عالجت هذا جف كبدي

وإن عالجت ذاك ربا طحالي

If I treat this, my liver dries up

And if I treat that, my intestines wither
