صاح أيري ورمحه فوق خصيي

ه ولا رمح ضمرة بن هلال

My spear pierced his flank above his testicles-

Not the spear of Dhimar son of Hilal-

قربا مربط النعامة مني

لقحت حرب وائلٍ عن حيال

Near the ostrich's tethering place I met him.

I clashed in war against Wael's men in battle.

ثم أهوى بطعنةٍ بات منها

يرم ستي ذاك الشقي بحال

Then I struck with a stab that left him

Thrashing about, that wretched man, on the ground.

فتولى يقول وهو طعينٌ

دمه مع خراه مثل البزال

So he turned away, saying as he bled,

His blood flowing with his guts like quicksilver:

لم أكن من جناتها علم الل

ه وإني بحرها اليوم صالي

"By Allah, I had no knowledge of her gardens,

Though today I water them copiously."
