1. يا سائلي عن بكاي حين رأى

    دموع عيني تسابق المطرا

    O you who ask about my weeping when I saw

    Tears from my eyes racing the rain

  2. ساعة قيل الوزير منحدرٌ

    أسرع دمعي وفاض منحدرا

    When it was said the minister fell

    My tears flowed faster downhill

  3. وقلت يا نفس تصبرين وهل

    يعيش بعد الفراق من صبرا

    And I said: O soul, will you be patient, can

    One live after parting with patience?

  4. شاورته والهوى يفتته

    والرأي رأيُ الصواب قد حضرا

    I consulted with passion that melts it

    And reason is the reason of right that attended

  5. أهوى انحداري والحزم يكرهه

    وتارك الحزم يركب الغررا

    I desire my descent though prudence hates it

    And leaving prudence rides on harm

  6. لأنني عاقلٌ ويعجبني

    لزوم بيتي وأكره السفرا

    Because I'm sane and I like

    Staying home and hate traveling

  7. الخيش نصف النهار يعجبني

    والماء بالثلج بارداً خصرا

    Sitting half the day pleases me

    And water with ice, cool belly

  8. والشرب في روشني أقول به

    كما أرى الماء منه والقمرا

    And drinking from my goblet I say of it

    As I see the water and moon in it

  9. ولا أقود الخيل العتاق بلى

    أسوق بين الأزقة البقرا

    And I don't lead the freed horses, but

    I drive cows through the alleys

  10. من كل جاموسةٍ لعنبلها

    رأس بقرنيه يفلق الحجرا

    Any cow with udders for her bull

    A head with two horns splitting rocks

  11. قد نفخ الشحم جوفها فغدا

    كأنه بطن ناقةٍ عشرا

    Fat filled its gut so it became

    Like a ten-month pregnant she-camel's belly

  12. لما أتتني بالليل مقبلةً

    وثوبها بالخرا قد ائتزرا

    When she came to me at night walking

    Her clothes girded with rough cloth

  13. تركض مثل الحصان نافرةً

    ومن يرد الحصان إن نفرا

    She gallops like a startled horse

    And who can stop a horse when it startles?

  14. مد ذراعي في سرمها لبباً

    وسد أيري في سرمها شعرا

    I stretched my arm into her blouse feeling

    And combed her hair with my right hand

  15. أحسن في الحرب من صفوفكم

    غداً قعودي أصفف الطررا

    I'm better in war than your ranks

    Tomorrow sitting braiding the hair

  16. وأنتف الشعر من جبين حر

    لطفت في نتفه وما شعرا

    And plucking hair from the brow of a free woman

    I'm gentle in plucking it and she feels nothing

  17. أو مبعرٍ جعسه يطالعني

    من كوة الباب كلما زحرا

    Or a ram raising its head looking at me

    From a hole in the door whenever I bellow

  18. هيهات أن أحضر القتال

    وأن ترى بعينيك فيه لي أثرا

    Alas! That I attend war

    And that your eyes see any trace of me in it

  19. بل الذي لا يزال يعجبني ال

    دبيب بالليل خائفاً حذرا

    Rather, what pleases me still is

    Creeping frightened and wary at night

  20. أنا إلى تلك هي نائمة

    وذا إلى ذاك بعد ما سكرا

    I'm heading to where she's sleeping

    And this one to where they got drunk

  21. وضجة النيك كلما ضرطت

    واحدةٌ تحت واحدٍ نخرا

    And the noise of good sex whenever

    One under and one over snorts

  22. وقول بعض المميزين وقد

    شم فسانا بأنفه سحرا

    And the talk of some experts when they

    Smelled our farts in the morning by their noses

  23. في جعس هذا فطورةٌ وأرى

    أن خرا تلك بعد ما اختمرا

    There's freshness in this ram's fart and I see

    The dung of that cow after it fermented

  24. الدف يوم الصبوح دبدبتي

    وبوقي النايُ كلما زمرا

    The tambourine on morn pitter-pattering

    And my flute wailing whenever it moaned

  25. وخريتي كلما رميت بها

    مقتل ذقنٍ خصبتها بخرا

    And my poems whenever I recited them

    Were a massacre whose chins I fattened with verse

  26. هذا اعتقادي وهكذا أبداً

    أرى لنفسي فأنت كيف ترى

    This is my creed and so forever

    I see for myself, so how do you see?
