وقد كان يسبي القلب في كل ليلةٍ

ثامنون بل تسعون نفساً وارجح

Every night he would captivate hearts,

Eighty, nay ninety souls and more.

يهيم بهذا ثم يعشق غيره

ويسلاهم من فوره حين يصبح

Smitten with one, then loving another,

Forsaking them as soon as dawn breaks.

وكان فؤادي صاحياً قبل حبكم

وكان بحب الخلق يلهو ويمزح

My heart was wakeful before your love,

Playing and jesting with loving people.

فلما دعا قلبي هواك أجابه

فلست أراه عن ودادك يبرح

When your love called to my heart, it responded.

Since then, I do not see it leaving your affection.

رميت بهجرٍ منك إن كنت كاذباً

وإن كنت في الدنيا بغيرك أفرح

I cast away any estrangement from you, if you are untrue.

And if I find joy in the world with other than you,

وإن كان شيء في البلاد بأسرها

إذا غبت عن عينيَّ عندي يصلح

Or if there is anything in all the lands,

That if absent from my eyes, seems good to me.

فإن شئت واصلني وإن شئت لم تصل

فلست أرى قلبي لغيرك يصلح

If you wish, keep me close, and if you wish, do not.

For I do not see my heart suited for any but you.
