If spring’s face is smiling,
the gleaming iris is its front teeth.
How lovely it is—a smiling, fragrant tooth,
fragrant with the sweetness of the beloved’s breath.
Its lover, fearing the envier’s eye upon it,
coined its name, sawsan, from its opposite: sūʾ sinn, “bad tooth.”
And when a love-struck soul inhales its scent,
it leaves upon the nose its mark—
just as the beloved leaves costly perfume
upon his darling’s cheeks, to remember him by.
O chamberlain, ever since his Creator fashioned him,
He crowned him with eminence and adorned him.
When Time sees him smiling,
it has seen all it ever desired.
And if the crescent moon sees him rising into view,
it says, “My Lord and your Lord is God.”
