Where are those stars of youth,

Where is that breeze of youth?

Do I find in imagining them some brightness,

Do I find in yearning for them some fragrance?

And my pouring tears attain them.

Companions with whom the morn awakens,

    Gazelles who enjoy its luxury.

Maidens who pour towards it with sweetness.

Nights when no lover hinders me,

And my pact when no censurer blames me.

When my morn has no vigilant watcher,

And my night of union has no obscuring darkness.

How not, when the sun of dawn is intimate with me

And the full moon of nightfall is my boon companion.

My wine is dissolved musk from gems,

And my meadow is a tender verdant garden.

And my sky is filled with sparkling stars.

And the demon of my concern is spurned and outcast.

The delusion of a pleasant life which illusion showed me

That time is an intimate, loving friend.

And the billowing sea of doubt which certainty reached me

That the infant of wishes is weaned.

And the branch of youth which old age overcame

Like the foliage of a garden overtaken by debris.

Washed away by time and the gentle breeze.

Nights and days of determined, apportioned misery.

On wings whose feathers are sorrows.

A hell, it would become it at dawn.

It sleeps but does not slumber.

Moving while the stars isolate them.

While without them is barren hope.

Before which the crescent moon and stars submit.

And for the floating ones a ship cruising.

So by your name the speech has been differentiated

As the Almighty, the Wise has granted you favor.

With that which the Hearing, Knowing does not waste.
