دَخَلتُ عَلى اِبنِ الشَهرزوريِّ لَيلَةً
وَقَد أُغلِقَت دونَ الوَزيرِ المَغالِقُ
I entered upon Ibn al-Shahrazuri one night,
with the locks already shut against access to the vizier.
فَعايَنتُهُ وَلهانَ يَرطلُ فَيشَةً
وَيُنشدُها وَالخَدُّ بِالدَمعِ غارِقُ
I beheld him, love-distraught, bedding Faysha,
and reciting to her, his cheek awash with tears:
وَماذا عَسى الواشونَ أَن يَتَحَدَّثوا
سِوى أَن يَقولوا إِنَّني لَكِ عاشِقُ
“What could the talebearers possibly report
except that they say I am in love with you?
نَعَم صدقَ الواشونَ أَنتَ حَبيبَةٌ
إِلَيَّ وَإِن لَم تَصفُ مِنكِ الخَلائِقُ
Yes, the talebearers spoke true: you are my beloved,
dear to me, though your disposition toward me is not sincere.”
