1. اللَهُ يَعلَمُ ما سَخنتَ لِعِلَّةِ

    عَرَصَت مِنَ المَأكولِ وَالمَشروبِ

    God knows for what cause you grew hot,

    Though from eating and drinking naught came to pass.

  2. لَكِنَّ نَفسَكَ إِذ رَأَت لَكَ صاحِباً

    قَد عابَ وَهوَ إِلَيكَ جِدُّ قَريبِ

    But your soul, when it saw you had a boon-companion

    Who was finding fault, though kin and very near,

  3. فَكَأَنَّها أَنفَت لِذاكَ فَنالَها

    أَلَمُ الكَريمِ لِصُحبَةِ المَعيوبِ

    Felt as though it loathed him and recoiled on you

    The noble one's pain at consorting with the censured.
