1. Woe, if parting has drawn near,

    and I was scorched by the heat of what lay concealed within it.

  2. We were together, and you dwelt in it;

    but now it recoils because my brother has gone far from us.

  3. I ask God, the All-Hearing, to watch over him,

    whether he stays with us or journeys away.

  4. Yet I shall die if there grows distant

    from me his dwelling, though we have not even set out.

  5. O you whose beauty of form has worn me thin,

    was there before you ever another so fair?

  6. Never did I hear of him, that I might mention him,

    though indeed for a time I took pains to learn of him.
