أيبسْتَ أفئدةً بالحزنِ يا خضْرُ

أيبسْتَ أفئدةً بالحزنِ يا خضْرُ

فالدمعُ يسقيكَ إنْ لمْ يسقِكَ المطرُ

فالدمعُ يسقيكَ إنْ لمْ يسقِكَ المطرُ

You have withered hearts with sorrow, O Khaḍir;

so tears will water you, if the rain does not.

منها خلقْتَ فلمْ يسمحْ زمانُكَ أنْ

منها خلقْتَ فلمْ يسمحْ زمانُكَ أنْ

يشينَ حسنَكَ فيهِ الشيبُ والكبرُ

يشينَ حسنَكَ فيهِ الشيبُ والكبرُ

From earth you were created; your lifetime did not permit

gray hair and old age to mar your beauty within it.

فإنْ رُددتَ فما في الردِّ منقصةٌ

فإنْ رُددتَ فما في الردِّ منقصةٌ

عليكَ قدْ ردَّ موسى قبلُ والخِضرُ

عليكَ قدْ ردَّ موسى قبلُ والخِضرُ

And if to earth you have been returned, that return reflects no shame

on you: Moses and al-Khidr were returned before.
