ما الناسُ ناسٌ كنتُ أمسِ عهدتُهُمْ

والدارُ دارٌ كنتُ أمسِ عَهِدْتُها

The people are not the people I knew yesterday;

and the dwelling is the same dwelling I knew yesterday.

فإذا تأملْتُ الرجالَ فقدتُهُمْ

وإذا تأملتُ البقاعَ وَجدْتُها

When I contemplate the men, I find them gone;

and when I contemplate the places, I find them still there.
