ما الدهرُ إلاّ عجبٌ فاعتبرْ

أسرارَ تصريفاتِهِ واعجبِ

Time is nothing but a wonder—so contemplate

the mysteries of its vicissitudes, and marvel.

كم باذلٍ في منصبٍ مالَهُ

ماتَ وما هُنِّيَ بالمنصبِ

How many a man, for an office, has spent his wealth,

then died without being congratulated upon attaining it.
