لقد غفلَتْ صروفُ الدهر عني

وبتُّ منَ الحوادثِ في أمانِ

The turns of fate have left me be,

And I was safe from all calamity.

وكدتُ أنالُ في الشرفِ الثريا

وها أنا في الترابِ كما تراني

I almost grasped glory and esteem,

Yet here I am, in dust - as you can see.
