  1. وأسرقُ ما استطعتُ منَ المعاني

    فإنْ فقتُ القديمَ حمدْتُ سيري

    I steal what meanings I can

    If I fall short of the ancients, I praise my path

  2. وإنْ ساويتُ مَنْ قبلي فحسبي

    مساواةُ القديمِ وذا لخيري

    If I equal those before me, that suffices me

    To equal the ancients is a boon for me

  3. وإنْ كانَ القديمُ أتمّ معنى

    فذلكَ مبلغي ومطارُ طيري

    If the ancients perfected the meaning more

    That is my goal and my wings' flight

  4. وإنَّ الدرهمَ المضروبَ باسمي

    أحبُّ إليَّ مِنْ دينارِ غيري

    A coin minted with my name

    Pleases me more than another's dinar
