1. عجبتُ لشيءٍ كلُّ شيءٍ يهابُهُ

    وكمْ فيهِ مِنْ نفعٍ عظيمٍ ومِنْ ضررْ

    I am amazed by something, everything fears it

    Yet it provides great benefit and great harm

  2. لهُ وجنةٌ محمرَّةٌ وذوائبٌ

    طوالٌ وعنقٌ لا يلابُسُهُ قصرْ

    It has a reddish mane and a long tail

    A long neck not confined by a collar

  3. وسعيٌ بلا رجلٍ وبطشٌ بلا يدٍ

    وحقدٌ بلا قلبٍ وأكْلٌ بلا ثغرْ

    It moves without legs and strikes without hands

    Malice without a heart, feeding without a mouth

  4. لهُ فردُ عينٍ في وجوهٍ كثيرةٍ

    ومِنْ عجبٍ أنْ ليسَ يوصفُ بالعورْ

    A single eye in many faces

    Strangely, it is not described as blind

  5. لهُ نقطةٌ سوداءُ مِنْ فوقِ رأسِهِ

    وهذا لعمري حليةُ الحيَّةِ الذكَرْ

    A black dot above its head

    By my life, it is the adornment of the male serpent

  6. وسرَّتُهُ بالمعنيين كنخلةٍ

    سحوقٍ وخيرُ اللغزِ ما حيَّرَ الفكرْ

    Its secret has two meanings, like a date palm

    Soft and ripe, the best riddle perplexes the mind

  7. تراهُ نهاراً كالبعوضةِ خسَّةً

    وبالليلِ كالطودِ الذي طالَ واشمخرْ

    By day it seems a worthless fly

    By night like a towering, haughty pillar

  8. على أنَّهُ حامي الحمى ويضيعُ مَنْ

    يجاورُهُ هذان ضدانِ في النظرْ

    Though it guards the protected, it destroys those

    Who live near it, two opposites to behold

  9. يعجُّ ويُبدي أنَّةً وتحرُّقاً

    على أهلِهِ حتى يلينَ لهُ الحجرْ

    It boils and shows vexation and burning

    Against its people until even stone yields to it

  10. إذا أبدلوا بالباءِ حرفَ ختامِهِ

    ترى اسماً وفعلاً ثم حرفاً له وبرْ

    If you change the last letter to a "ba"

    You see a name, verb, then a letter and righteousness

  11. وتصحيفُهُ يا أيها العدلُ جارحٌ

    فإياكَ منهُ فَهْوَ كالوخزِ بالإبرْ

    But to misspell it, O just one, is harmful

    So beware, it pricks like a needle

  12. وإنَّ لهُ ضداً هوَ الخلدُ فاعجبوا

    لخلْدٍ لهُ عينانِ فَهْوَ منَ العبَرْ

    It has an opposite, which is eternity, so marvel

    At an eternal one with two eyes, it is wondrous

  13. إذا لم تجدْ في جنةِ الخلدِ حلةً

    فحذركَ يا مسكينُ تلقاهُ في سقرْ

    If you do not find respite in the garden of eternity

    Poor soul, beware you meet it in Hellfire

  14. فيا ناظراً في اللغزِ لو رمتَ كشفَهُ

    رجعْتَ إلى القولِ الذي قالَهُ عمرْ

    So you who ponder the riddle, if you tried to uncover it

    You would return to the words spoken by Omar
