وأفشيْتُ سرِّي إلى صاحبٍ

فعدْتُ لهُ طولَ دهري ذليلا

I confided my secret to a friend,

And for an age endured his tyranny.

فوا أسفا كيفَ أودعتُهُ

ليومِ العداوةِ سيفاً صقيلا

Alas, how bitterly I rue

Entrusting to a foe my naked sword!
