أَسَفي كيفَ كنتُ أطلبُ عزاً

بالولاياتِ وَهْيَ عَيْنُ الهوانِ

How I regret seeking honor

Through ruling over states, the essence of disgrace,

كنتُ لا أعرفُ الخمولَ لجهلي

ليتني كنتُ خاملاً منْ زمانِ

I did not know indolence due to my ignorance,

If only I had been idle long ago
