علامَ أردتَ تهجرني علاما

وتوقظُ بالنوى أهلاً نياما

Why did you want to abandon me, why?

And arouse with spears people who were asleep

لعلكَ يا جليدَ القلبِ تبغي

رحيلاً يورثُ الدمعَ انسجاما

Perhaps you, oh cold-hearted one, want

A departure that brings about tearful harmony

وتتركُنا بلا رجلٍ كبيرٍ

نراجعُهُ إذا رُمْنا مراما

And leave us without a great man

Whom we can refer to when we seek purpose

أتنزعَ آلةَ التعريف منا

وما أعني بها ألفاً ولاما

Do you want to take from us the instrument of knowledge?

I do not mean by it the alphabet

فهلْ لاقيتَ في حلبٍ هموماً

فتزمعَ عنْ نواحيها اهتماما

So have you found worries in Aleppo

And so desire to avoid its concerns?

وما برحَتْ إلى الشهباءِ منا

سراةُ بني أبي بكرٍ تسامى

And the caravans of the sons of Abu Bakr did not depart from us

They attained above what they hoped for from it

فنالوا فوقَ ما يرجونَ منها

وما ذمّوا لها يوماً ذِماما

And they did not blame it one day

So do not take Damascus as a substitute for its people

فلا تأخذْ دمشقَ لهل بديلاً

أغيظاً ذاكَ منكَ أمِ انتقاما

That would anger them more than you or revenge

And if you are indifferent about separation

وإنْ تكُ بالتفرّقِ لا تبالي

فهذا يمنعُ العينَ المناما

Then this prevents the eye from sleep

And if you depart to gain wealth, that is easy

وإنْ ترحلْ لنيلِ غنى فَسَهْلٌ

غناكَ هنا إذا أمسكتَ عاما

Your wealth here if you hold it for a year

And if you depart seeking to perfect prestige

وإنْ ترحلْ تريدُ تمامَ جاهٍ

فمَهْ إني أحذرُكَ التماما

Beware! I fear that completion for you

And if you depart hoping for fame

وإنْ ترحلْ رجاءً لاشتهارٍ

فكمْ منْ شهرةٍ توهي العظاما

How much fame destroys the bones

And it is enough fame for you, generosity and knowledge

وحسبُكَ شهرةً كرمٌ وعلمٌ

سبقْتَ بهِ الفرادى والتؤاما

You surpassed individuals and groups with it

Stay with family in prosperity and comfort

أقمْ في الأهلِ في رغدٍ وطيبٍ

بأمري واغتنمْ ذاكَ اغتناما

By my order, and take advantage of that

For family has loyalty even if others betrayed you

فللأهلِ الوفاءُ وإنْ سواهمْ

وَفاكَ تضمُّناً غدَرَ التزاما

Deceiving your embrace tomorrow

No addition comes to the sustenance of a greedy one

فليسَ يُزادُ في رزقِ حريصٍ

ولو جابَ المهامةَ والإكاما

Even if he travelled Muhammah and Al-Ikam

Do you think you will gain an unworthy brother

أتظعن تستفيدْ أخاً لئيماً

وقدْ ضيَّعْتَ إخوتَكَ الكراما

When you have wasted your noble brothers?

If you do not accept your family as neighbors

إذا لمْ ترضَ بالأهلينَ جاراً

فقرِّبْ من خيامهم الخياما

Then pitch your tent near their tents

So there comes to you an informant soon

ليأتيكَ المخبِّر عنْ قريبٍ

وتنشقُ منْ مواطِنكَ الخزامى

And you sniff from your places the perfume

For excess distance from a homeland and family

ففرطُ البعدِ عن عن وطنٍ وأهلٍ

حِمامٌ قبلَ أنْ تلقى الحِماما

Is mourning before you encounter mourning

So do not listen to the words of so-and-so

فلا تسمعْ كلاماً منْ فلانٍ

فلستَ بسامعٍ منهُ كلاما

You are not hearing words from him

And do not act ignorantly with the ignorance of people

ولا تجهلْ بجهلٍ مِنْ أناسٍ

وإنْ همْ خاطبوكَ فقلْ سلاما

Even if they addressed you, say hello

For how many envious people cry in secret

فكمْ منْ حاسدٍ في السرِّ يبكي

ويظهرُ حينَ تلقاهُ ابتساما

And show a smile when they meet you

Not all men are brothers giving advice

وما كلُّ الرجالِ أخاً نصيحاً

لصاحِبِهِ وإنْ صلَّى وصاما

To their companion, even if he prayed and fasted

So do not believe a false saying

فلا صدقْتَ في قولٍ كذوباً

ولا استأمنْتَ مَنْ أكلَ الحراما

And do not feel safe with one who took forbidden money

And do not revere an enemy who died of rage

ولا تُعظِمْ عدوّاً ماتَ غيظاً

بشهرةِ فضلِنا ورجا انهزام

At the prominence of our merit, and hoped for defeat

And how can you stand in reverence of one

وكيفَ تقومُ إعظاماً لمَنْ

يُطلْ في خدمة العلمِ القياما

Who aims to serve knowledge by rising?

Our staying is harder on the enemies

إقامتنا أشدُّ على الأعادي

وأعظمُ في قلوبهمُ اضطراما

And greater turmoil in their hearts

Did we imitate Alexander the King?

أبالإسكندرِ الملكِ اقتدينا

فليسَ نطيلُ في أرضٍ مقاما

We do not stay long in one land

And if you travel, you travel, but

وإنكَ إنْ رحلتَ رحلتَ لكنْ

تخلِّفُ أهلَنا مثلَ اليتامى

You leave our family like orphans

It is enough for us to lose our brothers at first

كفانا فقدُ إخوتِنا ابتداءً

فلا تجعلْ تشتّتنا الختاما

So do not make our dispersion the ending
