عبَسَ اللّيلُ فلا صُبْحٌ يُرى
وهَوى النّجْمُ وغابَ الفَرْقَدُ
Night scowled, and no dawn could be seen.
The star sank, and Farqad disappeared.
وضَحِكْنا وجَلَبْنا طُرَفاً
أفَلا يَضْحَكُ هَذا الأسْوَدُ
And they laughed and brought forth rare delights.
Then should this black one not laugh?
