نفحَتْ فشبّتْ لافِحَ التّذْكارِ
والنّجْمُ نِضْوُ سُرىً وفَلُّ سِفارِ
The breeze blew gently, igniting the embers of memory,
While the stars of Sirius flickered and the Pleiades set.
وأتَتْ محمّلَةَ مُتون أحادِثٍ
فاهَتْ بهنّ مَباسِمُ الأزْهارِ
It came, laden with the cargo of news,
And the flowers smiled, blossoming.
هفّافَةً يقْضي لطيفُ هُبوبِها
بتَذكُّرِ الأوْطانِ والأوْطارِ
With a gentle wafting that rekindles,
Thoughts of homelands and dwelling places.
فضُلوعُ مُشْتاقٍ يُشِبُّ وُقودَها
ذكْرُ العُهودِ ودمْعُ عيْنٍ جاري
The longing of a lovelorn one flames,
With memories of times past, and tears flowing.
للهِ ما قدْ هِجْتِ يا ريحَ الصَّبا
وقدَحْتِ بيْنَ جَوانِحي منْ نارِ
By God, what passion you've stirred, oh breeze of youth!
And kindled a fire within my soul.
أمُعَلِّلي بمَطامِعٍ منْ دونِها
قطْعُ النّفوسِ مراحِلَ الأعْمارِ
Can I blame it on desires other than her
That my soul traverses stages of life?
أرْتاحُ فيكَ للَوْمِ لُوّامي كَما
يرْتاحُ نجْديٌّ لشمِّ عَرارِ
I find solace in you from the rebukes of reproachers
As the Najdi finds solace in the scent of clove.
إمّا نطَقْتُ فذِكْرُ عهْدِكَ منْطِقي
وإذا صَمَتّ فأنت في إضْمارِ
When I speak, it is the memory of our days I voice,
And when silent, you remain imagined.
اللهَ في قلْبٍ تقسّمُ نارُهُ
ما بيْنَ مدْمَعِ ديمةٍ وأُوارِ
God resides in a heart whose fire
Splits between flowing tears and passion’s flame.
تتَعاوَرُ الأفْكارُ فيهِ ذُبالَةً
فهيَ الفَراشُ تَجولُ حوْلَ النّارِ
Thoughts flutter around it confused,
Like moths circling about a fire.
تزْدادُ أشْواقي إذا يوْمٌ خَلا
كتَضاعُفِ الأعْدادِ بالأصْفارِ
My longings grow with each day that passes
As numbers multiply when zeros abound.
مَنْ لي بقَلْبٍ كلّما نادَى بهِ
داعِي الصّبابةِ طارَ كلَّ مَطارِ
If only my heart would fly whenever
The voice of my youth calls to it.
مطْلُ الغَني ظُلمٌ ففِيمَ ظلَمْتَني
ولوَيْتَ دَيْني عنْ وُجودِ يَسارِ
To prolong denial is an injustice - so why deny me
When you could settle my debt from your abundance?
جاوَرْتَ قلبي واطّرَحْتَ حُقوقَهُ
واللهُ قد وصّى بحِفْظِ الجارِ
You dwelled in my heart and neglected its rights
Though God commanded the protection of neighbors.
يا سائِلَيَّ سَلا عَليماً بالهَوى
عنْدَ العَروضِ حقائِقُ الأشْطارِ
O questioner, ask one knowledgeable of love
About the realities of verses in their appropriate settings.
إنّي امرؤٌ أعْطيْتُ دهْريَ مِقْوَدي
وجرَيْتُ في طَلْقٍ معَ الأعْصارِ
I am one who held my own reigns in life
And flowed freely with the winds of time.
وخلَعْتُ نُسْكي واشْتَمَلْتُ تولُّهي
ما بيْنَ كأسِ فمٍ وآسِ عِذارِ
I broke my abstinence and donned my submission,
Between a cup's rim and a goblet's excuse.
وألِفْتُ في شَرَكِ الجُفونِ تخبُّطي
فحَذارِ منْ فِتَنِ العُيونِ حَذارِ
And I became accustomed to my fumbling ways
In the company of eyelids, so beware the trial of eyes!
