أُجِلُّكَ عنْ عتْبٍ يَغُضُّ منَ الوُدِّ

وأُكْرِمُ وجْهَ العُذْرِ فيكَ عنِ الرّدِّ

I delay reproach that diminishes affection

And honor the face of excuse in you, not refusal

ولكنّني أُهْدي إلَيْكَ نَصيحَتي

وإنْ كُنْتُ قدْ أهْدَيْتُها ثمّ لمْ تُجْدِ

But I give you my advice

Though I had given it before and it was not useful

إذا مِقْوَلُ الإنسانِ جاوَزَ حَدَّهُ

تحوّلَتِ الأغْراضُ منْهُ الى الضِّدِّ

When a person's words exceed their limit

Purposes turn from them to the opposite

فأصْبَحَ منْهُ الجدُّ هَزْلاً مُذمَّماً

وأصْبَحَ منْهُ الهَزْلُ في صورَةِ الجِدِّ

So seriousness from them becomes despised jest

And jest takes on the form of seriousness

فَما اسْطَعْتُ قَبْضاً للعِنانِ فإنّهُ

أحَقُّ السّجايا بالعَلاءِ وبالمَجْدِ

So I do not seize the reins

For the noble qualities deserve excellence and glory
