قَالَ لِي وَالدَّمُوعُ تَنْهَلُّ سُحْباً
فِي عِرَاصٍ مِنَ الْخُدُودِ مُحُولِ
He said to me while tears flowed down
In streams on cheeks furrowed and hollow,
بِكَ مَا بِي فَقُلْتُ مَوْلاَيَ عَافَا
كَ الْمُعَافِي مِنْ عَبْرَتِي وَنُحُولِي
"What ails thee?" I said, "May God give thee health
From my weeping and my sorrow!
أَنا جَفْنِي الْقَرِيحُ يَرْوِي عَن الأَعْمَشِ
وَالْجَفْنُ مِنْكَ عَنْ مَكْحُولِ
My eyelids are sore from ceaseless weeping
And my eyes from tears cannot follow."
