1. أطْلَعْنَ في سُدُفِ الفُروعِ شُموساً

    ضحِكَ الظّلامُ لَها وكانَ عَبوسا

    The suns peered out from the foliage of branches,

    and darkness laughed at them, though it was sullen.

  2. وعطَفْنَ قُضْباً للقُدودِ نَواعِماً

    بوِّئْنَ أدْواحَ النّعيمِ غُروسا

    We bent the slender twigs into gentle, curving necks

    and lodged the joys of bliss in sturdy nests.

  3. وعدَلنَ عنْ جهْرِ السّلامِ مخا

    فَةَ الواشي فجِئْنَ بلَفْظِه مهْموسا

    We turned quietly aside from the loud greetings of spies

    and returned their whispered words in a whisper.

  4. وسَفَرْنَ منْ دهَشِ الوَداعِ وقوْمُهُنْ

    نَ الى التّرحُّلِ قدْ أناخُوا العِيسا

    We departed from the confusion of farewells, while our people

    had tethered their camels, heading for travel.

  5. وخلَسْنَ منْ خلَلِ الحِجالِ إشارةً

    فترَكْنَ كلّ حِجىً لَها مخْلوسا

    We stole furtive glances through chinks in the curtains,

    leaving behind every embroidered cloth closely guarded.

  6. لمْ أنْسَها منْ وحْشَةٍ والحيُّ قدْ

    زجَرَ الحُمولَ وآثَرَ التّغْليسا

    I could not forget her in my lonely dwelling, though life

    had frightened off the caravan and opted for deception.

  7. لا المُلْتَقَى منْ بعْدِها كثِبٌ ولا

    عُوجُ الرّكائِبِ تسْأمُ التّخْييسا

    Neither rendezvous nor return of riders will tire of winding paths

    after her departure made my shelter desolate.

  8. فوقَفْتُ وِقْفَةَ هائِمٍ بُرَحاؤهُ

    وُقِّفَتْ عليهِ وحُبِّسَتْ تحْبِيسا

    I halted, bewildered and confused,

    detained and confined in apprehension.

  9. ودعَوْتُ عيْني عاتِباً وعُيونُها

    بعَصا النّوى قدْ بُجِّسَتْ تَبْجيسا

    I blamed my eyes and their incessant flowing tears,

    so copious they were precious pearls.

  10. نافَسْتِ يا عَيْنَيّ درَّ دُموعِهِمْ

    فعرَضْتِ دُرّاً للدّموعِ نَفِيسا

    How forlorn is an abode without loved ones,

    though it may seem populated and friendly!

  11. ما لِلْحِمى بعْدَ الأحبّةِ مُوحِشاً

    ولكَمْ تَراءَى آهِلاً مأنوسا

    How fractious are the horses circling an uninhabited ruin,

    though formerly docile and tamed!

  12. ولسِرْبِه حوْلَ الخَميلَةِ نافِراً

    عمّنْ يُحسُّ بهِ وكانَ أنيسا

    How morose is its shaded courtyard which gladdens no heart

    and stirs no inclination for flowers or wedding feasts!

  13. ولظِلّهِ المَوْرودِ غَمْرُ قَليبِه

    لا يقْتَضي ورْداً ولا تعْريسا

    I greeted it, and only my echo replied.

    No difference between them when compared!

  14. حيّيْتُهُ فأجابَني رجْعُ الصّدى

    لا فرْقَ بينَهُما إذا ما قِيسا

    Its voice never exceeds repetition,

    no surplus to relieve ardent yearning.

  15. ما إنْ يَزيدُ علَى الإعادَةِ صوْتُهُ

    حرْفاً فَيَشْفي بالمَزيدِ نَسيسا

    The spring ran dry; the shade we stood in dwindled,

    where we conversed and sat.

  16. نضَبَ المَعينُ وقُلِّصَ الظلُّ الذي

    ظَلْنا وَقوفاً عندَهُ وجُلوسا

    We promise reunion and seize the moment,

    passing cups of love's torment in circulation.

  17. نَتواعَدُ الرّجْعَى ونغْتَنِمُ اللِّقَى

    ونُديرُ منْ شكْوى الغَرامِ كُؤوسا

    So if you ask, do not ask anyone for information,

    and if you hear, do not feel anything.

  18. فإذا سألْتَ فَلا تُسائِلْ مُخْبِراً

    وإذا سمِعْتَ فلا تُحِسّ حَسيسا

    My pact with her is that fate grants wishes

    and its gifts required no kissing.

  19. عهْدي بهِ والدّهْرُ يُتْحِفُ بالمُنى

    وقدِ اقْتَضَتْ نُعْماهُ أن لا بُوسا

    Life in its prime is transient, and time

    has disclosed to me its bride as fickle.

  20. والعيشُ غضّ الرّبْعِ والدُنْيا قد

    اجْتُليَتْ بمَعْناهُ عليّ عَروسا

    Can fate restore the era of my youth

    after its lessons were learned and taught?

  21. أتُرَى يُعيدُ الدّهْرُ عهْداً للصِّبا

    درَسَتْ مَغاني الأنْسِ فيه دُروسا

    Distant lands replace horizons

    with the elegant splendor of a sullen people.

  22. أوْطانُ أوْطارٍ تعوّضَ أفقُها

    منْ روْنَقِ البِشْر البَهيّ عَبوسا

    But neither "perhaps" nor "if only" help

    except for Jesus' miracles.

  23. هيْهاتَ لا تُغْني لعلّ ولا عَسى

    في مثلِها إلا لآيةِ عِيسى

    Fate is an instructor whose decree

    once decided, resumes teaching.

  24. والدّهرُ في دسْتِ القَضاءِ مدرِّسٌ

    فإذا قضَى يستأنِفُ التّدْريسا

    It samples life's problems, especially

    the goods and evils of mankind.

  25. تفْتَنُّ في جُمَلِ الوَرى أبْحاثُهُ

    لاسيّما في بابِ نِعْمَ وَبِيسا

    Human nature cannot be purified

    of its innate disposition by the Most Holy.

  26. وسَجيّةِ الإنسانِ ليسَ بناصِلٍ

    منْ صِبْغِها حتّى يُرَى مرْموسا

    Attention to distinctions is a profound mystery

    ordained before the creation of souls.

  27. يغْتَرُّ مهْما ساعدَتْ آمالُهُ

    فإذا عراهُ الخطْبُ كانَ بَؤوسا

    Whoever denies the superiority you were granted

    rejects what is plainly seen and verified.

  28. فلَوَ انّ نفْساً مُكِّنَتْ من رُشْدِها

    يوْماً وقدّسَها الهُدَى تَقْديسا

    Entities are not equal in merit and temperament.

    God ingeniously created them as He wished.

  29. لمْ تستَفِزّ رُسوخَها النّعْمى ولا

    هلَعَتْ إذا كشَرَتْ إليْها البُوسا

    Whoever weighed your essence against others

    erred in judgment and measurement.

  30. قُلْ للزّمانِ إليْكَ عنْ متذمِّمٍ

    بضَمانِ عِزّ لمْ يكُنْ ليَخِيسا

    Loyalty to you in sincerity is an unbreachable pact

    that accepts no pretext or deception.

  31. فإذا استحرَّ جِلادُهُ فأنا الذي

    استَغْشَيْتُ منْ سَرْدِ اليَقينِ لَبوسا

    Attachment to your noble line precludes

    the abased being grafted onto your scions.

  32. وإذا طَغَى فِرْعَوْنُهُ فأنا الذي

    منْ ضُرِّهِ وأذاهُ عُذْتُ بموسَى

    The House of the Virgin and your lineage

    guarded by angels in an invincible domain.

  33. أنا ذا أبو مَثْواهُ مَن يحْمي الحِمَى

    لَيْثاً ويُعْلِمُ بالزّئِيرِ الخيسا

    As for your administration, you perfected it,

    surpassing Aristotle in governance.

  34. بحِمَى أبي حَمّو حطَطْتُ رَكائِبي

    لمّا اختَبرْتُ اللّيْثَ والعِرّيسا

    Had Cyrus glimpsed some of it,

    he would not have aspired to be called chief.

  35. أسَدُ الهَياجِ إذا خَطا قُدُماً سَطا

    فيُخلِّفُ الأسَدَ الهِزَبْرَ فَريسا

    Had your justice prevailed through the years, none would protest

    being wronged, and no era would be woeful.

  36. بدْرُ الهُدَى يأبَى الضّلالَ ضياؤُهُ

    أبداً فيَجْلو الظّلْمَةَ الحِنْديسا

    Had the secluded harem-women traced their line

    to your steadfast kinsmen, they would not be base.

  37. جبَلُ الوَقارِ رَسا وأشْرَقَ واعْتَلَى

    وسَما فطأطأتِ الجِبالُ رُؤوسا

    You guided the difficult; each arduous task

    became compliant, though it had been obstinate.

  38. غيْثُ النّوالِ إذا الغَمامُ حَلوبَةٌ

    مثَلَتْ بأيْدي الحالِبينَ بَسوسا

    You confronted lions and a cloud of arrows

    for warriors when the ignited steel sparked.

  39. تَلْقاهُ يومَ الأنْسِ رَوْضاً ناعِماً

    وتَراهُ بأساً في الهِياجِ بَئِيسا

    As if they peered out from behind the shields

    casting askance glances through the visors.

  40. كمْ غَمْرَةٍ جلَّى وكمْ خطْبٍ كَفَى

    إنْ أوْطَأ الجُرْدَ العِتاقَ وَطيسا

    Neither Hatem nor Ma'mar in ancient times

    ever matched your munificence, though oft compared.

  41. كم حِكْمَةٍ أبْدَى وكمْ قَصْدٍ هَدَى

    للسّالِكينَ أبانَ منْهُ دَريسا

    Whoever resembled you in generosity

    deemed the virtues mere clothing and food.

  42. أعْلَى بَني زيّانَ والفَذُّ الذي

    لبِسَ الكَمالَ فزيّنَ المَلبوسا

    You are the one who emancipated souls and people

    when the ways to salvation were ample.

  43. جمَعَ النّدى والبأسَ والشّيمَ العُلا

    والسّؤدَدَ المُتواتِرَ القُدْموسا

    You are the one who extended the realm of God

    with sincere alms that muzzled Iblis.

  44. والحِلْمُ ليسَ يُبايِنُ الخُلُقَ الرِّضَى

    والعِلْمُ ليسَ يُعارضُ النّاموسا

    You supported Andalusia with every stamped ingot

    unacquainted with fraud.

  45. والسّعْدُ يُغْني حُكمُهُ عن نصْبَةٍ

    تسْتَخْبِرُ التّرْبيعَ والتّسْديسا

    You shipped goodness which almost filled the channels of acceptance,

    and righteousness sailed like a great vessel.

  46. كمْ راضَ صعْباً لا يُراضُ مُعاصِياً

    كمْ خاضَ حرْباً لا تُخاضُ ضَروسا

    You furnished it with hands, though they were almost

    bankrupt by fate's decree.

  47. بلغَ التي لا فوْقها مُتمَهِّلاً

    وعَلا السُّها واسْتَسْفَلَ البَرْجيسا

    You remedied its affliction through subtle strategy

    that surpassed the medical science of Galen.

  48. يا خيْرَ منْ خفَقَتْ علَيْهِ سَحابةً

    للنّصْرِ تُمْطِرُهُ أجشَّ بَجيسا

    You made its hopes a reality like alchemy

    providing sublimation, decomposition, distillation and the rest.

  49. وأجَلّ مَنْ حملَتْهُ صهْوَةُ سابِحٍ

    إنْ كرّ ضعْضَعَ كرُّهُ الكُرْدوسا

    So you poured from its hopes a torrent of treasure,

    and from its needs reams of precious papers.

  50. قَسَماً بمَنْ رفَعَ السّماءَ بغيْرِ ما

    عمَدٍ ورفّعَ فوقَها إدْريسا

    They were stunned, and when confident

    did not question weight, color or texture.

  51. ودَحا البَسيطَةَ فوْقَ لُجٍّ مُزْبِدٍ

    ما إنْ يَزالُ علَى القَرارِ حَبيسا

    You minted from the essence of prose pure ingots

    and from the nature of script dirhams.

  52. حتّى يُهيبَ بأهْلِهِ الوعْدُ الذي

    حشَرَ الرّئيسَ إليْهِ والمرؤوسا

    You inclined toward virtue, supporting what you heard

    with deeds you considered congruous.

  53. ما أنْتَ إلا ذُخْرُ دهْرِكَ دُمْتَ في الصْ

    صَوْنِ الحَريزِ ممَنَّعاً محْروسا

    After destruction, you rebuilt your people by striving

    to enrich the destitute and free the captive.

  54. لوْ ساوَمَتْهُ الأرضُ فيكَ بِما حوَتْ

    لرآكَ مُسْتاماً بِها مبْخوسا

    You raised the banner of their glory after

    time had reversed it and called for its folding.

  55. حلَفَ البَرورُ بِها الِيَّةَ صادِقٍ

    ويَمينُ مَنْ عقَدَ اليَمينَ غَموسا

    Through subtle strategy, you remedied their affliction,

    outwitting the medical science of Galen.

  56. مَنْ قاسَ ذاتَكِ بالذّواتِ فإنّهُ

    جهِلَ الوِزانَ وأخْطأ التّقْييسا

    You blunted the sharp edge of time, though it dictated

    and executed more than the swift sword.

  57. لا تسْتَوي الأعْيانُ فضْلَ مزيّةٍ

    وطَبيعةً فطرَ الإلاهُ وَسُوسا

    You sharpened a edge once nicked

    and revived a waning crescent moon.

  58. لعِنايَةِ التّخْصيصِ سرٌّ غامضٌ

    منْ قبْلِ ذَرْءِ الخَلْقِ خصَّ نُفوسا

    In adversity you sought only Exalted God,

    so every hardship was relieved and injury healed.

  59. مَنْ أنْكَرَ الفَضْلَ الذي أوتيتَهُ

    جحَدَ العِيانَ وأنْكَرَ المحبوسا

    You rose early and found guidance in its light,

    discovering relief in hardship.

  60. مَنْ دانَ بالإخْلاصِ فيكَ فعَقْدُهُ

    لا يَقْبَلُ التّمويهَ والتّلْبيسا

    You are a leader certain of victory

    who cultivates barren and fertile land.

  61. والمُنْتَمَى العلَويُّ عيصُكَ لم تكُنْ

    لتُرَى دَخيلاً في بَنيهِ دَسيسا

    You are a fulfiller who made the throne

    an Arabian litter and the royal seat a domed howdah.

  62. بيْتُ البَتولِ ومُنْتَمى الشّرَفِ الذي

    تَحْمي الملائِكُ دوْحَهُ المَغْروسا

    When you contract or agree to terms, you profit,

    placing your trust solely in the All Holy.

  63. أمّا سياستُكَ التي أحْكَمْتَها

    فرمَيْتَ بالتّقْصيرِ أسْطالِيسا

    Resolve charts the stars. Its edifice

    remains erect as long as founded on piety.

  64. فلَو أنّ كسْرَى الفُرْسِ أبصرَ بعْضَها

    ما كان يطْمَعُ أن يُعَدَّ سَؤوسا

    Your patience and reliance recall

    his treatise or the peacock's cry.

  65. لوْ سارَ عدْلُك في السّنين لما اشْتَكَتْ

    بَخْساً ولمْ يكُ بعضُهُنّ كَبيسا

    Whoever God chooses, He guides his efforts,

    so he deems grand fortune paltry.

  66. ولَوِ الجواري الخُنّسُ انْتسَبَتْ الى

    أقْوامِ عزْمِكَ ما خَنَسْنَ خُنوسا

    You gained only purity through assaying,

    shedding time's ornate garb.

  67. قُدْتَ الصِّعابَ فكُلُّ صعْبٍ سامِحٌ

    لكَ بالقِيادِ وكان قبْلُ شَموسا

    Eclipse has often augured evil

    and obscurity obscured the sun.

  68. تَلْقَى اللّيوثَ وللقَتامِ غَمامةً

    قدَحَ الصّفيحُ وميضَها المَقْبوسا

    Then its configuration cleared from a horizon

    of joy that never augurs woe.

  69. وكأنّها تحْتَ الذّروعِ أراقِمٌ

    ينْظُرْنَ منْ خلَلِ المَغافِرِ شُوسا

    Take it as an ode from me in good faith

    to please rhyme and delight in homonyms.

  70. ما لابْنِ مامَةَ في القَديمِ وحاتِمٍ

    ضرَبَ الزّمانُ بجودِهِمْ ناقُوسا

    If it lengthens, embellished with pearls,

    its misfortune was being inauspicious.

  71. مَنْ جاءَ منْهُمْ مثْلَ جودِكَ كلّما

    حسَبوا المَكارِمَ كُسْوَةً أوْ كِيسا

    But for you, it would not have listened to a suitor's proposal

    and would have languished spinsterhood in her home.

  72. أنتَ الذي افْتَكّ السّفينَ وأهْلَه

    إذْ أوسِعَتْ سُبُلُ الخَلاصِ طُموسا

    She sought Solomon of the age and emulated

    Bilqis's gait as she walked.

  73. أنتَ الذي أمْدَدْتَ ثغْرَ اللهِ باصْ

    صَدَقاتِ تُبْلِسُ كَرّةً إبْليسا

    My affection for you has not abated

    since I sealed its pact.

  74. وأعَنْتَ أنْدَلُساً بكلِّ سَبيكةٍ

    موسومَةٍ لا تعرِفُ التّدْليسا

    By the health of its bond, I have witnesses

    who fear no criticism or fraud—

  75. وشحَنتَهُ بالبُرِّ في سُبُلِ الرِّضا

    والبِرُّ قارَبَ قاعُها القامُوسا

    Pacesetters of renown who take oaths with the right hand.

    Their vows will never be labeled sinful.

  76. إنْ لم تجرَّ بِها الخَميسَ فطالَما

    جهّزْتَ فيها للنّوالِ خَميسا

    My thoughts will not settle

    until I settle beside you as a companion

  77. وملأتَ أيْديها وقدْ كادَتْ علَى

    حُكْمِ القَضاءِ تُشافِهُ التّفْليسا

    And walk straight toward you correctly

    on the course I charted then reversed.

  78. صدّقْتَ للآمالِ صَنْعَةَ جابِرٍ

    وكفَيْتَها التّشْميعَ والتّشْميسا

    This is the debt of my days. If it allows,

    no thing will remain for Joseph to settle.

  79. والحَلَّ والتّقْطيرَ والتّصْعيدَ والتْ

    تَخْميرَ والتّصْويلَ والتّكليسا

    God's work continues to flow

    toward your abode, guiding mankind.

  80. فسَكَبْتَ منْ آمالِها مالاً ومنْ

    أوْراقِها ورَقاً وكُنّ طُروسا

    Successive like the passage of days,

    the sequence unbroken, Friday to Thursday.

  81. بُهِتوا فلمّا استُنْجِزوا لمْ يُنْكِروا

    وزْناً ولا لوْناً ولا مَلْموسا

    If only your reign which you deemed worthy

    had been just, instead of wicked!

  82. وتُديرُ منْ قلْبِ السّطورِ سَبائِكاً

    منْها ومِنْ طبْعِ الحُروفِ فُلوسا

    It would have been coupled with mention of you and prayers for you

    which you choose over all glorification and sanctification.

  83. ونَحَوْتَ نحْوَ الفضْلِ تعْضِدُ منْ

    هُ بالمَسْموعِ ما ألفَيْتَ منْهُ مَقيسا

    For it you are the heart of its life—

    no matter your rectitude, you remain its chief.

  84. وجبَرْتَ بعْدَ الكَسْرِ قومَكَ جاهِداً

    تُغْني العَديمَ وتطْلِقُ المَحْبوسا

  85. ونشَرْتَ رايَةَ عزِّهم منْ بعْدِما

    دالَ الزّمانُ فسامَها تنْكيسا

  86. أحْكَمْتَ حِيلَةَ بُرْئِهِمْ بلَطافَةٍ

    قدْ أعْجَزَتْ في الطِّبِّ جالِينوسا

  87. وفَلَلْتَ منْ حدِّ الزّمانِ وإنّهُ

    أوْحى وأمْضى منْ غِرارِ المُوسَى

  88. وشحَذْتَ حدّاً كان قبْلُ مثَلّماً

    ونعَشْتَ جَدّاً كانَ قبْلُ تعيسا

  89. لمْ ترْجُ إلا اللهَ جلّ جَلالُهُ

    في شِدّةٍ تُكْفَى وجُرْحٍ يوسَى

  90. قدّمْتَ صُبْحاً فاسْتضأتَ بنورِهِ

    ووجَدْتَ عنْدَ الشِّدّةِ التّنْفيسا

  91. ما أنتَ إلا فاتحٌ مُتيقِّنٌ

    بالنّجْحِ تَعْمرُ مُمْرِعاً ويَبيسا

  92. ومُناجِزٌ جعلَ الأريكةَ صهْوَةً

    عرَبيّةً والمُتّكا القَرْبوسا

  93. ما إنْ تُبايِعُ أو تُشارِي واثِقاً

    بالرّبْحِ إلا المالِكَ القُدّوسا

  94. والعَزْمُ يفْترعُ النّجومَ بناؤهُ

    مهْما أقامَ علَى التُّقى تأسيسا

  95. ومَقامُ صبرِكَ واتّكالِكَ مُذْكِرٌ

    بحَديثِهِ الشَّبْليَّ أو طاوُوسا

  96. ومنِ ارْتَضاهُ اللهُ وفّقَ سعْيَهُ

    فرأى العظيمَ منَ الحُظوظِ خَسيسا

  97. ما ازْدَدْتَ بالتّمْحيصِ إلا جدّةً

    ونضَوْتَ منْ خِلَعِ الزّمانِ لَبيسا

  98. ولَطالَما طرَقَ الخُسوفُ أهِلّةً

    ولَطالَما اعْترَضَ الكُسوفُ شُموسا

  99. ثُمَّ انجَلَت قَسَماتها عن مَشرِقٍ

    للسّعْدِ ليْسَ يُحاذِرُ التتْعِيسا

  100. خُذْها إليْكَ علَى النّوى سينيّةً

    تُرْضي الطِّباقَ وتشْكرُ التّجْنيسا

  101. إنْ طووِلَتْ بالدُرِّ منْ حوْلِ الطُلا

    يوْماً تشكّتْ حظَّها المَوْكوسا

  102. لوْلاكَ ما أصْغَتْ لخِطْبَةِ خاطِبٍ

    ولَعُنِّسَتْ في بيْتِها تعْنيسا

  103. قصَدَتْ سُلَيْمانَ الزّمانِ وقارَبَتْ

    في الخَطْوِ تحْسِبُ نفْسَها بِلْقيسا

  104. لي فِيكَ ودٌّ لمْ أكُنْ منْ بعْدِ ما

    أعطَيْتُ صفْقَةَ عهْدِهِ لأخيسا

  105. كمْ لي بصحّةِ عقْدِهِ منْ شاهِدٍ

    لا يحْذَرُ التّجْريحَ والتّدْليسا

  106. يقْفو الشّادةَ باليَمينِ وإنّهُ

    لمؤمَّنٌ منْ أنْ يُعَدَّ فَسيسا

  107. لا يسْتقِرُّ قَرارُ أفْكاري إلى

    أنْ أستَقِرَّ لَدى عُلاكَ جَليسا

  108. وأرى تُجاهَكَ مُستَقيمَ السّير للْ

    قَصْدِ الذي أعْمَلْتُه معْكوسا

  109. هيَ دَيْنُ أيّامي فإنْ سمَحَتْ به

    لمْ يبْقَ منْ شيءٍ عليْهِ يوسَى

  110. لازالَ صُنْعُ اللهِ مجْنوباً الى

    مثْواكَ يُهْدي البِشْرَ والتّأنِيسا

  111. مُتَتابِعاً كتَتابُعِ الأيّامِ لا

    يَذَرُ التّعاقُبَ جُمْعَةً وخَميسا

  112. فلوِ انْصَفَتْكَ إيالَةُ المُلْكِ الذي

    رُضْتَ الزّمانَ لَها وكان شَريسا

  113. قُرِنَتْ بذِكْرِكَ والدُعاءُ لكَ الذي

    تَخْتارُهُ التّسبيحَ والتّقْديسا

  114. القَلْبُ أنتَ لَها رئيسُ حَياتِها

    لم تُعْتَبَرْ مهْما صلَحْتَ رَئيسا
