1. أألْقِي الى الأيّامِ فضْلَ مَقادَتي

    فتَحْبِسُني ما بيْنَ كدٍّ وإرْهاقِ

    I cast my days ahead in anxious thought,

    And they confine me in toil and weariness.

  2. وأُتلِفُ بينَ الخلْقِ والرِّزْقِ فِكْرَتي

    ولسْتُ بخَلاّقِ ولسْتُ برَزّاقِ

    I try to reconcile my mind and means of living,

    But I'm no miser, nor beneficent.

  3. إذا طُوِيَ الإثْراءُ لي في تملُّقٍ

    رضِيتُ بعِزِّ النّفْسِ في عِزِّ إمْلاقِ

    If riches folded up for me in flattery,

    I'd be content with my soul's honour in a shroud.
