O companion, how fragrant are the settlements with dew!
Do you think it has prolonged its dampness?
It is the abode of love, the aspiration of the soul within,
For ever and ever, and desires gathered.
If it was from which the air was perfumed,
And drew fragrance, else it was from them.
Who will give my eyes a glance, and my breath,
In its winds and in its soil, a smell?
The past was remembered, so I shuddered, as though
An angel had slapped me suddenly.
A homeland I lived my youth in,
Not sullied by the cold, blameworthy.
I turned from it while my soul, because of whom I
Left behind threading through it worried,
Was a dream. So woe to him who hoped for life
And blinded and deafened him, his ignorance!
I contemplate life after the body was created
And its structure difficult, blameworthy.
And the plentitude of youth turned, despite
Itself, blind.
So he who made his path to God his destination and refuge
Has indeed succeeded.
Whoever spends the night anxious
From the delusion of worldly life, God will increase his worries.
