In secret from Taym and from Taima
She shot my heart, her arrows reached their mark
An unerring archer, not sparing in her blows
Like a black rock, but preferred
To the spear-head by her dark eyes' glances
If she hints at rejection or speaks outright
Then death lies in hint and speech alike
Hiyafa whom none but the forbearing dare desire
Would that one were daring towards Hiyafa
When she appeared a sorceress in the mosque
I called to her beseechingly with my prayer
"O you there, if you have come to worship
Then my devotion and piety give me life."
How my enemies rejoice, how much you resemble them
And their gloating enemies is sorrow enough
