What is the state of one whose body and heart

Have been ravaged by his sorrows and passions?

Love has fooled him, so before he fell

His place of rest became where he collapsed.

His breath was filled with agonizing pain,

And his supports were crushed by regret.

His tears seem like the true covenants,

And his deathbed seems strewn with brambles.

Alas for him – separated in his weeping –

If only his isolation could bring him together!

His darling would delight in the lovely garden,

And his heart would yearn for the flashing lightning.

He spends the night torn between violent desire

And never-ending torment that wears him out.

Good fortune in love consoles him for losing all,

Yet his bliss in passion brings him woe.

The dawn there denies him, in its whiteness,

While the gloom knows him, in its blackness.

His loved one shortens the length of his life,

Yet his enemies prolong the good tidings about him.

Suspicion adulterates the affection she bears him

While he is candid, pure and true in his love.

The wounding of his soul, his sickness and groaning

Bare witness, though his witnesses are masked.

It saddens him – woe is he! – that they

Will not let his death be a martyr’s.

Do not reproach him for his love, for his only goal

Is seemly, however pure his passion seems.
