عرى الأعمار يعلوها انفصامُ

وأمر اللّه ما منه اعتصامُ

The ages slipped by, riven by schism,

God's command allows no resistance.

سواءٌ في الثرى ملكٌ وعبدٌ

ثوى النعمانُ حيث ثوى عصام

King and slave are equal in the earth,

Al-Nu'man and 'Assam lie side by side.

أعدّ لموقف العرض احتجاجا

لعلّك ليس يقطعُك الخصام

Prepare to stand at judgement resigned,

Perchance disputation may not seize you.

ولا يعظم سوى التفريط خطبٌ

عليك فإنّهُ الخطب العظام

No fault excels neglect and omission,

On you; of faults the greatest of all.

أبن لي هل تبارزُ أم تولّى

إذا شركَت بك الحرب العقام

Say, will you strive or turn and retreat,

If War's fell minions on you complete?

ولم تعرِف وقد فجىءَ انتقالٌ

أغفرٌ للذنوبِ أم انتقامُ

You never learned that death is sure and fleet,

Whether pardon or vengeance you meet.

بوقّ من السافر على اغترارٍ

فليس لساكني الدنيا مقامُ

Hark to the traveller's bell in the night,

No place of rest for the world's denizens.

وإنّ الموتَ للأتقى شفاءٌ

كما أنّ الحياة له سقامُ

For the devout is death but healing and light,

As life to him is but sickness and blight.

حذار حذار إنّك في بحارٍ

من الدنيا طمت فلها التطامُ

Beware, beware the seas of the world

Whose waves clash in ceaseless commotion.

وتعلمُ أنّها تردي يقيناً

ومنّا في غواربِها اقتحامُ

You know they race to disaster unfurled,

We in their launch there is no promotion.

وإنّ من العجائب أن أمرّت

مواردُها وإن كثُرَ الزحامُ

Strangest of all that their torrents swirled

Though crowds blocked their path, unchecked in their motion.
