1. For God’s servant, no prestige equals obscurity.

    So implore God to grant acceptance.

  2. And keep your striving free of ostentation.

    For no jihad can coexist with betrayal.

  3. Time’s treachery has made that plain.

    So take heed, O people of understanding.

  4. And attain perfection through hunger.

    For deficiency lies only in excess.

  5. Rare is delight in the companionship of this world,

    for its abode bears the loneliness of ruins.

  6. Its turns of fortune openly cry out,

    “Parting!” to those who settle in its quarter.

  7. How many creatures has it ravaged,

    while we remain heedless of that.

  8. And before, it subdued many youths,

    and afterward, it cast away many elders.

  9. Whatever prudence neglected in particular matters,

    I washed away with streaming blood.
