1. أكذا النفوس إذا عشقن الأنفسا

    تعيي الأساة ضناً ويعييها الأسى

    When souls fall in love with themselves

    Sorrows weary them, and sorrow makes them weary

  2. أم كنت من رزق الهوى وهوانه

    وحدي ومن حرم المنى والمؤنسا

    Was I destined to be deprived of the bliss of love?

    Alone, denied wishes and company?

  3. أواه كم من حرقة في مهجتي

    لتشوقي المى المراشف ألعسا

    Oh, how many burning sorrows in my guts

    Yearning for the beloved's pillows in agony

  4. حقف تفرع منه غصن مثمر

    قمرا يقل من الذوائب حندسا

    If only a fruitful branch would grow from it

    A moon diminishing doubts and suspicions

  5. بأبي خيالا منه حيا مضجعي

    غلساً ومن كتم الزيارة غلّسا

    With it my imagination came alive

    Secretly, and the one who concealed the visit was secretive

  6. وألم بي إلمام من صحب السرى

    مترقبا وسري الدجى متهجسا

    And a companion of the caravan hovered around me

    Watching, while my secret in the darkness was uneasy

  7. وأراد أن يلقي عشاءً رحله

    فكأنه انضي المطي معرّسا

    He wanted to unload his luggage

    As if his camel was restless and loaded

  8. في ليلة ظلماء غير زيها

    حتى حسبناها نهاراً مشمسا

    On a very dark night not like any other

    We thought it was a sunny day

  9. وتبلج الحسن البديع ضياؤه

    يمحو دجنة كل ليل عسعسا

    The beautiful shining light eliminates

    The darkness of each murky night

  10. فارتد لا يثنى على آثاره

    طرفاًولا تلوي امونا عرمسا

    So he went back not turning

    To his tracks or twisting the peg

  11. حذرا كمهديه يخاف رقيبه

    خوف المحب عليه من ان يمسسا

    Fearing for his beloved from his guardian

    The lover's fear that she may be touched

  12. ومن الوشاة قلائدا وغلائلا

    لا تطمأن تضوعا وترجسا

    And from the slanderers necklaces and braids

    That do not settle, suspicious and cautious

  13. فغدوت اندم من أبي غبشان اذ

    عوضته واعتاض عني البسبسا

    So I regretted losing my absent love

    And instead depression took over me

  14. فإذا منعت من الهوي طيف الكرى

    فمتى تنال به الظباء الكنسا

    And if I am prevented from seeing the image of the loved one

    When will the gazelles attain the fenced off

  15. ولقد يئست من المنى ويحق المرائي

    الزمان وأهله أن ييئسا

    I have despaired of wishes; it is right for the deluded

    Time and its people to despair

  16. أمراء ختالون تبصر فذهم

    في الاطلس الخزي ذئباً أطلسا

    Princes who are vain, in their ignorance

    A vicious wolf appears to them in the garment of a fox

  17. لا يرتجون سوي الأجل إلا رأس

    العلى والعقلاء ترجو الأرأسا

    They do not hope for anything but death

    Except the supreme head and the rational hope for heads

  18. والأكرم ابن الأكرمين أرومة

    بسقت أفانينا وطابت مغرسا

    And the most generous, son of the most generous

    Our cups overflowed and the orchards thrived

  19. من أسرة أسروا المحامد فاغتدت

    وقفا عليهم في الزمان محبسا

    From a family who surpassed in praise

    So it remained a sanctuary for them in time

  20. وتدرعوا فقر الثناء مفاضة

    موضونة وتمغفروها قونسا

    Armored with flowing generosity

    Laid down as a duty and forgiven as a penalty

  21. فارتد نافذ كل سهم طائشا

    عنهم وسهمهم اصاب وفرطسا

    So every reckless stray arrow rebounded off them

    While their arrow hit and pierced

  22. وتوارثوا العلياء ابناً عن اب

    بر كأرث الخمس اصحاب الكسا

    Inheriting glory from father to son

    Like the inheritance of the five companions of the cloak

  23. فعلت بهم في العالمين وكيف لا

    يعلو على التقوى بناء أسسا

    You have honored them in the two worlds, why wouldn’t

    A structure built on piety rise high?

  24. وهم هم من معشر سادوا بما

    شادوا وبالتشييد تعلى المجلسا

    It is they who have surpassed in what

    They built and through building the council rose high

  25. أسدٌ احامس في الكريهة والتقى

    والمجد يصطحب الأشد الأهمسا

    A roaring lion in times of crisis and fear

    And glory accompanies the most resolute of the brave

  26. تعساً لمن جاراهم في سؤدد

    وهو الجدير بأن يضل ويتعسا

    Woe to those who opposed them wrongfully

    Worthy of going astray and failing

  27. ومناقب الفضلاء ليس بمدرك

    من حظها الأوفى الغبي الأبخسا

    The virtues of the virtuous cannot be grasped

    By the most unfair miser who got the least fortune

  28. يابن الأولى لا عيب فيهم غير ان

    يذروا الفصيح بنائليهم اخرسا

    O son of great men, they have no shortcoming

    Except that they left the eloquent silent

  29. أهلا بمقدمك الذي اقدامه

    تغدو الرؤس لهن خضع نكسا

    Welcome to the one whose steps

    Heads bow down humbly to

  30. وتود لو فرشت جفون عيوننا

    ارضاً لهن ولو فرشنا السندسا

    If only we could spread our eyelids

    As a floor for them or spread silk

  31. ولو اننا مرعي الربيع وخيله

    ترعى به حواذننا والنرجسا

    If only we were the pasture of spring and its horses

    That would graze our cheeks and basil

  32. فلقد منحنا من لقاك مسرة

    ملكت بها منا القلوب الأنفسا

    You have bestowed us with the delight of meeting you

    Our hearts have been possessed by it

  33. وعزاز نالت عز حكمك ثانيا

    فتبججت واذل عزلك كلسا

    And a dear one attained the honor of your rule secondly

    So it shone and your isolation dimmed

  34. فكأنما اعنى ابن ارفع راسه

    ارضا وطأت بها وقال الهرسا

    As if I mean the son of the highest head

    The ground has been tread upon and the groom said enough

  35. فصعيدها الأكسير يغني طالباً

    من ان يظل مصعداً ومدمسا

    Its ground of potions is sufficient for the seeker

    That he does not remain climbing and descending

  36. ولأنت من لوصافحت راحاته

    اعوام يوسف لان منها ما فسا

    You are the one whom if his palms were shaken for years

    Yusuf's life would not be enough

  37. ولأنت من نسخت أيادي فضله

    بعض الحروف فلا لعل ولا عسا

    You are the one whose favors copied by hands

    No wishful thinking nor hoping remains

  38. ولأنت من ملأ الصدور محبة

    عمن سواه فما يسعن توسوسا

    You are the one who filled up chests with love

    From anyone else, no whispering remains

  39. فوقاك ربك حاسديك وان علا

    مقدار ذاتك ان ينال ويلمسا

    May your Lord protect you from envious ones even if

    The extent of your being reaches and touches

  40. إن السماء على علو مكانها

    لم تمتنع بالشهب من أن تحرسا

    Indeed the sky is high in its place

    But was unable to avoid meteors because of its height

  41. وكفاك شرة أم دفر إنها

    لخبيثة قبحت وراقت ملبسا

    It is enough harm for you, is it a bald old hag

    Ugly, she appeared ugly in clothing

  42. نشتاقها حسناء وهي لناقد

    مستخبر تبدو عجوزاً مومسا

    She looks beautiful to a critic

    An investigator would see an old flirt

  43. كالأفعوان للامسى أعضائها

    خشنت طبائعها ولأنت ملمسا

    Like snakes, its limbs

    Rough natured, and you are soft

  44. ستغول كلا من بنيها مثلما

    غالت قديما في بنيه الأفطسا

    Evil to anyone from her children just as

    In past times she was evil to her children Al-Afṭas

  45. وبقيت ما بقى الزمان فأنه

    بوجود ذاتك محسن فيما اسا

    She remained as time remained so it

    In your existence, is good in what it has ordained

  46. فلقد لقيت به خطوباً جمة

    لولاك لم اسطع بهن تنفسا

    I have faced through it tremendous adversities

    Were it not for you, I wouldn't have been able to breathe

  47. فكأن جودك منه شق صحيفتي

    حتى خلصت وخلتني المتلمسا

    It is as if your generosity tore up my page

    Until I was saved and it left me untouched

  48. وكأنما خادعت منه لصرتي

    فيه ابا حش وكنت البيهسا

    It is as if I cunningly escaped from its clutches

    And instead you became a loving father and I the rescued

  49. تتوقد الأحشاء منك ذكاؤه

    ويسح كفك عارضا متبجسا

    My insides blaze from your wisdom

    And your palm cools a feverish forehead

  50. كالهندةاني الصقيل بمائه

    نار الفرند جديرة ان تقبسا

    Like Indian steel polished with its waters

    Worthy for the Frank’s fire to be lit

  51. أسمى خير الخلق لديك فأنها

    كالفيلسوف تندسا وتنطسا

    The best of creation in your eyes so they are

    Like the philosopher, burrowing and clever

  52. وكأنها في كل بيت شمته

    منها تضم من القريض مهندسا

    And it is as if in every house its shrewdness

    From it, it includes a composed architect

  53. والشعر ما شاقتك منه حكمة

    لا ما يشوقك الكثيب الأوعسا

    And poetry - what wisdom was difficult for you

    Not what excites you, the most eloquent being useless babble

  54. فاسلم ودم لأجيد فيك مدائحا

    لو رامها العبسي عجزاً عبسا

    So be safe and willing for I will eulogize you

    If Al-Abbasi had aspired to eulogize you he would have failed

  55. تستفرس العرب الكرام معانيا

    وتميت فارس بالبيان تفرسا

    The generous Arabs understand meanings

    And you render Fāris dead in eloquence

  56. وأنا بمدحك في حسودك طاعن

    والليث من يمدحه ذم الهجرسا

    And I censure your envious ones in praising you

    And the lion - who praises him blames Al-Hijras
