1. أمض الجوى صد القريب المجانب

    وبعض نوى الأحباب كل النوائب

    The ardour of passion blocks the path of the indifferent beloved

    And some of the loved ones' vows bring all calamities

  2. وأعضل داء الحب حبك زاهداً

    على منعه تعطيك مهجة راغب

    And the worst malady of love is your love turning ascetic

    Yet if he denies you, a yearning heart turns to you

  3. ومن أعظم الحرمان أن تشتكي ظما

    ووردك سلسال نمير المشارب

    And the greatest deprivation is to complain silently

    While your love is a chain on the watering places of drinking

  4. فليت الهوى يرقي الهواء تمنعا

    على طالبيه كامتناع الكواكب

    If only passion would rise high to be inaccessible

    To its seekers, like the inaccessibility of the planets

  5. وليت سلو الحب سالم صبَّه

    وإن لم يرق في الحب سلم المحارب

    If only the sweetness of love had a safe poured drink

    And if passion does not please, at least the warrior would be safe

  6. لئلا يرجى مس ذا غير ساحر

    ولا يتمنى برء ذا غير كاذب

    So that the touch of a non-sorcerer would not be hoped for

    Nor the recovery from a non-liar wished for

  7. فحتى متى الشكو الهوي وهوائه

    لغير مجيب أو على غير واجب

    So for how long do I complain of passion and its caprice

    To one who does not answer or respond to what he owes?

  8. وتدرق عيني من ترقرق عبرة

    همت ودفاً همع السواري السواكب

    While my eyes shed copious tears

    That almost submerge companies of riders

  9. وبي لوعة قد لشفعتها بروعة

    يد البين ما بيني وبين الحبائب

    And I have such agony that if shared

    Would be relieved by the hand of separation between me and my loved one

  10. وفي كل آن أنة تبعث الأسي

    ويبقي التأسي والأساة بجانب

    And at every instant grief sends a lament

    And sorrow remains and sadness lingers

  11. مصائب أشواق تسمي صبابة

    ويعذب طعم الصاب دون المصائب

    Afflictions of passions dubbed morning draughts

    While the taste of the wine falls short of the afflictions

  12. أقول لظمآن الترائب والحشا

    وإني لظمآن الحشا والترائب

    I say to the thirsty of misfortunes and deprivation

    Yet I am thirsty of deprivation and misfortunes

  13. أمطعمك عبء الحب ما اسطعت فالهوي

    كوى عبئه قلباً هوى بالكواعب

    Shall I let you taste the burden of love? What capacity have you shown?

    For its burning has set aflame a heart that loved the beautiful maidens

  14. واعلم ما من منحة بعد محنة

    ترجئ ولا عتبي لديه لغائب

    And know that no favour comes after tribulation

    That brings hope, nor is the absentee blamed

  15. ولست ضمينا والغرام مضلة

    إذا ما غراماً صاح بي رشد صاحب

    I am not faultless, and passion misleads

    If passion calls me right, a rational friend contradicts

  16. فقلبي اعيى منقذ آل منقذ

    وأعوز فيه غالب بن غالب

    So my heart is blind though many try to save it

    And in it a victor lacks a victor

  17. ولكني أنذرت غير مجرب

    وان بلاء الحب بعد التجارب

    Yet I warn without having experienced

    That the test of love comes after trials

  18. فربما قالوا حذار بمطلب

    فكف بها عن نيله كف طالب

    Perhaps they would say: "Beware of what you seek

    So restrain yourself from attaining it like a seeker"

  19. وإني من عانى المهالك بالمها

    وبالبيض في الهيجاء بيض القواضب

    I am one who has endured deadly perils

    And in active battle, I am white like the fast sailing ships

  20. تحكمن بي كالدهر غير مدافع

    بأحكامه والبحر غير مداعب

    It has judged me like time, with no defence against

    Its judgements, and the sea toys not with me

  21. كأني بقلبي من سحر عيونها

    سيوف ابن سيفافي قراع الكتائب

    My heart by the magic of her eyes

    Is like swords of "Son of Swords" piercing battalions

  22. أخو السطوات المبدعات كأنها

    غرائب تبدو في عيون الغرائب

    The brother of overpowering surprises that seem

    Wondrous sights in the eyes of wonders

  23. وابن أبي العليا الشهيد عليها

    سقاه كجود منه جود السحائب

    And the son of the martyred superior Ali

    Its generosity quenched it like pouring rain

  24. مضي ذاهباً واستخلف الأمر بعده

    فخلناه فينا باقياً غير ذاهب

    It left continuing after it

    That which remains in us enduring, not departing

  25. كداود لما ورث العلم ابنه

    سليمان بث الحكم في كل جانب

    Like David when he inherited

    From his son Solomon the spreading of wisdom

  26. وباسيه هكذا في الفضل والفصل محسناً

    فأحرز في الحالين حسن التناسب

    In excellence and merit he improved both states for us

    Gaining fine compatibility in both conditions

  27. عفاء على أعدائه لا عداته

    فهن ديون في رقاب المواهب

    Pardoning his enemies, not punishing them

    For they are debts on the necks of grants

  28. تدر لنا أخلافها عن تخلف

    نبالا بها دراً كذر المذائب

    Its brilliances like the dawn lights

    Rising in the darkness, leaving white tents

  29. وإن زماناً جاد فينا بمثله

    لأعجب من أمثاله في العجائب

    When ambitions the size of mountains are granted

    By its lofty aspirations, even hilltops bow

  30. يضن من المر الأجاج بقطرة

    ويسمح بالعذب الفرات لشارب

    When the hands of hopes are adorned with some of it

    The hearts of endeavours attain every absent goal

  31. أمير أمنّا الدهر بعد أمانه

    على أن ما في الدهر أمن لراهب

    O you, at whose summons deaths race

    To the enemies, outstripping fate

  32. ولم تختلف آراؤنا مع وجوده

    على عدم البؤس الأشد المصائب

    And who, whenever the expanse narrows with an enemy host

    Feels as narrow as the chest burned with a hot brand

  33. فإن امتزاج الماء بالنار ناقل

    طبائعها للاعتدال المناسب

    His hands shatter the armies with his spear

    You would think them the hands of warriors amidst the fray

  34. وما كال ملك في الأنام بمسند

    ولا كل يوم في الزمان بناكب

    On the day when the sun shades before its darkness

    And his Armil constellation rises with the holes

  35. وحسب الليالي منه في الناس ما جنا

    لما قدمته من صروف الحقايب

    And we rain on him clouds of stars whenever

    The white hands of Canopus rise like lightning

  36. على أم دفر بعد رؤيته الرضا

    وان سخطت منها على أقاربي

    The hot desert burns with him, but he does not announce

    The neighing of the wild asses mingling with the croaking frogs

  37. فإن وجود البر من نفس فاجر

    يمحص عنه سيآت المعايب

    In him the shod, the barefoot, and the slippered

    Weddings, fangs, and claws

  38. أبا المنن الغر الزواهي كأنها

    مشارق أنوار بعين مغارب

    As if the ribs of the armoured are notebooks

    And his spears on them writing reeds

  39. إذا طلعت في المدهمات خلتها

    بياض الدراري في سواد الغياهب

    The terms of the enemies have dispersed

    And his swords amidst the throng subtracting accountants

  40. إذا الهمم الشم اللواتي تصاءلت

    لهام معاليها رؤس الأهاضب

    O best of those the spirit poured for a nation

    Pouring over its shoulders and prominent stars

  41. إذا لسمت أيدي الأماني ببعضها

    قلوب المساعي أدركت كل غائب

    You would think its violet pastures were Hyacinths

    In undisturbed water appearing not flowing

  42. ويا من إذا نودي نزال تسابقت

    مناياه للأعداء سبق السلاهب

    And you'd assume their rings had gathered

    The eyes of snakes in the skins of scorpions

  43. ومن كلما ضاق الفضاء بجحفل

    عليه كضيق الصدر من وصم ثالب

    And the beholder imagines the heads of its calves

    Wine froth formed from a pouring cup

  44. تشتت أيديه القنابل بالقنا

    فتحسبها أيدي سبا في المقانب

    Just as the pastures were polished by the shining dawn

    Improving them by the blowing of the gentle winds

  45. بيوم تغشى الشمس قبل قتامه

    ويشرق من خرصانه بالثواقب

    The meadows wish to pick their roses

    While the emaciated by hardship distrust the thorns

  46. ونمطره سحب الكاين كلما

    يد البيض لاحت كالبروق الخوالب

    Were it not for the fine rain from its April clouds

    The fox would not have reached them to devour

  47. وتلتهب الرمضاء فيه فلم يُبن

    صليل المواضي من صرير الجنادب

    Through it the anguished is secured, the intimidated fortified

    The thirsty finds water, the diver finds treasure

  48. الذي حافر فيه وذي ظف مأتم

    وأعراس ذي ناب وذات المخالب

    Like my brother's pardon, patience and loyalty

    And the torrent of a valley obstructed at Ma’rib

  49. كأن قلوب الدارعين دفاتر

    وأرماحه فيهن أقلام كاتب

    If alongside my utmost passion, being by your side

    With my heart and constant devotion was denied me

  50. وعدة آجال العدى قد تفرقت

    وأسيافه في الجمع أنمل حاسب

    By a time of dimmed authority and ebbing flood

    That gave my position to some strangers

  51. ويا خير من في الروع أفرغ لامة

    تفيض على أعطافه والمناكب

    The order may improve in other than its right people

    And the rancour of sword flames in the hand of a striker

  52. تخال النجيع الأرجواني ضمنها

    شقايق في ماء بدت غير دائب

    Though desire has encamped me for an event

    And destinations narrowed for the well-bred horses

  53. وتحسبها قد جمعت حلقاتها

    عيون الأفاعي في جلود العقارب

    I see what lies between me and you clearly

    As what lies between my eye and its brow

  54. ويعتقد الرائي رؤس قتيرها

    حباب مدام صيغ من كاس ساكب

    To you, the Solomon of time, I incite it

    With the wails of poetry like howling wailers

  55. كما صقلت مر الصبا متن ديمة

    فجعدها حسناً هبوب الجنايب

    Indeed praise, abundant and lasting, burdened it

    While passion weighed down my mounts

  56. تود الصوادي الحايمات ورودها

    وينكر هاضب الكدى في السباسب

    So take the best gift and we hope it is accepted

    Prince of glorious deeds, O Prince of prominent stars!

  57. ولو لم بر الخرصان رقراق مائها

    لما ولغت فيها كولغ الثعالب

    And do not listen after it to the verse of a poet

    For the voice of songs is not the braying of a hound

  58. بها أمن موتور وحصن مروع

    ومورد ظمآن ومنعة غاصت

    And if it is said poetry rules are all the same

    The Friesian's fire is not the fire of thorns

  59. كعفو أخي حلم وذمة ذي وفا

    وضحضاح سيل عاقه سد مأرب

    All songs may share the same principle, but they favoured

    The bow of the brow over the bowstring

  60. لئن صدني مع عظم شوقي ملازم

    إليك بقلبي واجتهاد مواظب

    You remain eternally praiseworthy

    And always steady through the ages

  61. زمان عسوف في الحكومة واهب

    مكاني من علياك بعض الأجانب

    And you still watch carefully over the times

    Guarding against its pitfalls and consequences

  62. فقد يستقيم الأمر في غير أهله

    وينبو غرار السيف في كف ضارب

    For its sons have sleeping hearts

    And open eyes like rabbits

  63. وإني وإن شط النوى بي لحادث

    وضاقت على الجرد الجياد مذاهبي

  64. لأبصر ما بيني وبينك بالثنا

    بأقرب ما بين عيني وحاجبي

  65. إليك سليمان الزمان زجرتها

    نجائب شعر كالقلاص النجائب

  66. لقد أثقل الحمد الجزيل ركابها

    وأثقلت الأشواق مني ركائبي

  67. فخذ خير ما يهدى ونرجو قبوله

    أمير القوافي يا أمير المناقب

  68. ولا تسمعن من بعدها نظم شاعر

    فصوت الأغاني غير نعق النواعب

  69. وإن قيل إن الشعر في الحكم واحد

    فليس كنار الفرس نار الحباحب

  70. وكل الحنايا في القسي قياسها

    سواء ولكن فضلوا قوس حاجب

  71. بقيت بقاء الحمد فيك مخلداً

    ورمت دوام الراسيات الرواسب

  72. ولا زلت عيناً للزمان بصيرة

    تراقب محذوراً به في العواقب

  73. فأبناؤه الاك نامت قلوبهم

    وأعينهم قد فتحت كالأرانب
