لو لم أطل أمل التلاق

ما عشت من ألم الفراق

If I had not prolonged the hope of meeting

I would not have lived the pain of separation

فأظل كالمسلوع من أفعى

النوي ورجاي وافي

So I remain like a snake bitten one

My light, my hope and my fidelity

يا ثالث القمرين إلا في

الكسوف وفي المحاق

O third of the two moons except

During eclipse and disappearance

حتام دمعي فيك لا

برقي وروحي التراق

My tears upon you will not

Cease and my soul will not be soothed

وإلام يستسقي الفؤاد

ظما وأجفاني سواقي

And why would the heart quench its thirst

While my eyelids are pouring rivers

وغريق دمع العين لا

تلقاه إلا في احتراق

And the drowning tears of my eyes

Meet only burning

والحب ما اورى الضلوع

جوى وما أروي المآقي

And love has not covered my ribs

With yearning and has not watered the waterways

فعساك ان تجزى محب

يك المحبة بالوفاق

I hope you reward your lover

With requital and harmony

ولقد لقيت هواك

أعظم ما لقيت وما ألاقي

And I have met your love

The greatest I have met and will ever meet

وصبرت فيك على العدا

صبر الأسير علي الوثاق

And I have been patient with you despite

The patience of a prisoner in shackles

وعلمت أن الصبر يا عذب

اللمي مر المذاق

And I knew that patience, oh sweet

Pain, is bitter in taste

فاعرض من الأعراض

اعراضي لديك من النفاق

So turn away from the turned away

Attitudes towards you full of hypocrisy

وارفق ولو بالألتفات

على ما بين الرفاق

And be kind even with a glance

Among colleagues

فلقد يكون تلفت

الأعناق داع للعناق

For a turned neck can be

A call for an embrace

واستبق مني باللقاء

بوافياً ليست بواقي

And seek me with meeting

Faithfully with no barriers

اعضاء صب ماله الاك

من عينيك واق

Members pour what you can

From your eyes and be alert

فالبيض سود عيونها

امضى من البيض الرقاق

As the bright darken their eyes

Firmer than thin pastry

وقد ودهن رشاقة في

الطعن كالسمر الرشاق

And they were given grace in

Stabbing like an elegant spear

وإذا بليت بحبهن

بليت بالدمع المراق

And when tested by their love

I was tested with the bitter tears

وإذا نزلت بمصطفى الآمال

والرحب الرواق

And when my hopes descended on Mustafa

And the vast temple

فانزل وأنت رقيقه

لتعود للعلياء راق

Descend while you are gentle

To return to the high grounds satisfied

ألا وحد العلبي من

يسمو على السبع الطباق

Verily the glory of Al-Albi is who

Transcends the seven heavens

الأمجد البر العفيف

الذي زهداً والنطاق

The glorious, righteous, chaste

Who abandoned worldly possessions and luxuries

والعالم العلم الشهير

بعلمه بالاتفاق

And the famous scholar

With unanimously recognized knowledge

والسابق ابن السابقين

إلى العلا حد السباق

And the foremost son of the foremost

To the most high with speed

لا يدركون بغاية في المجد

من ماض وباق

They do not realize the extent of glory

Of the past and remaining

ولكم كبا في أثرهم

راجي اللحاق عن اللحاق

And how enormous following in their trace

Is the hopeful beyond reach

ولو انه في عزمه كالسهم

عند الانطلاق

And if he in his determination was like an arrow

Upon release

ومتى تنال العير شأو

الأعوجيات العتاق

And when will the crippled reach the glory

Of the emancipated?

مثلا كمن يرقي ولا يرقى

السماء كذي البراق

An example is one who rises but does not rise

To the heaven like Al-Buraq

عظمت شقاوة حاسدي

علياه بل هم في شقاق

The misery of my envious enemies

Increased, indeed they are in agony

وأظنهم قلت جموعهم

جميعا بافتراق

And I reckon their small groups altogether

Are separated in dispersion

خلقوا لذاك وما لهم

يوم القيامة من خلاق

They were created as such and have nothing for them

On Judgement Day to create

وإليكها عذراء يغنيها

الصديق عن الصداق

And unto You, oh chaste whom The Truthful sufficed

From friendships

ما أمهرتها فكرتي

لسواك إلا بالطلاق

How skilled is my mind but to divorce

All except You

ولقد تناسق در حمدك

ضمنها أي انتساق

And Your praise polished like pearls is interlinked

In a well aligned order

فحلت وما افتقرت

لتحليتي جناس واشتقاق

You have solved while not needing

My word play, alliteration and derivation

بمدائح أشهى إلى ال

أرواح من راح وساق

With praises more beloved to souls

Than comfort and journeying legs

فاسلم ودم تسقي مدا

م الحمد بالكاس الدهاق

Greet and let the cup of praise

Water your landmarks

رب الشآم رياسة

ورئيس أرباب العراق

Lord of Sham and leader

And leader of the chiefs of Iraq

في نعمة بالأصطباح

مقيمة والأغتباق

With perpetual favor morning

And evening

فلأنت من يحي القريض

وقد تناهى في السباق

As You are the one who revives poetry

And has transcended in the race
