1. سقاك الحيا ريا وحياك أربُعا

    نعمنا بنعمان يهن فلعلعا

    Life watered you, so you lived fourfold,

    We enjoyed blessings through the Bestower of Blessings.

  2. وجادك جود الدمع يا سفح رامة

    بسفح إذا ضن السحاب وأقلعا

    Your generosity poured tears, O slope of Rama,

    With a slope that, when clouds are stingy, departs.

  3. فكم مر لي عيش بظلك حاليا

    سرى غير مذموم حميداً وأسرعا

    How much did I live in your shade temporarily

    Flowing, blameless, commendable and hastening,

  4. مخمصانة غيداء سحر جفونها

    يدير علينا البالي المشعشعا

    Two dark-eyed gazelles whose eyelids' magic

    Turns upon us the sequined destiny.

  5. بدت ومضاهي البدر تحت قناعها

    فلولا التقى صدقت فيها المقنعا

    Under her veil appeared flashes like the full moon’s,

    Else, were it not for virtue, I'd think her masked.

  6. من القوم لا أدري أأسياف قومها

    بيوم الوغى أم لحظها كان أقطعا

    Of her people, I know not if their swords

    In battle or her glances were more cutting,

  7. لقد حملتني عبء يوم فراقها

    ولو حملته يذبلا لتضعضعا

    She burdened me the day we parted,

    Had she borne it herself she'd have crumbled.

  8. وأقسم ما حققت عند وداعها

    أصبري أم عمري أم الحب ودّعا

    I swear I didn't, when we bade farewell,

    Tell her “Be patient” or “Farewell to love.”

  9. فواق رجونا الري منه على ظما

    فجرعنا صاب المصاب بأجرعا

    So we hoped the trellis would rain upon withered branches

    And we gulped the bitterness of tribulation greedily.

  10. ودهر طلبنا القرب فيه من النوى

    ففرق من آمالنا ما تجمعا

    We sought their nearness, but time separated

    What hopes we’d joined.

  11. أرتنا الليالي حاليات ضيعها

    فلما اختبرناهن كان تصنعا

    The nights showed us passing visions, then when

    We examined them, they were contrived.

  12. لقد وهبتنا فاستردت هباتها

    ولم تهب الأيام إلا لتمتعا

    She gifted us then took back her gifts,

    Days gift only to deprive.

  13. ومن صحب الدنيا ولو عمر ساعة

    تحول فيها حاله وتنوعا

    Whoever accompanied life even an hour

    In it his state changed and diversified.

  14. وليل غدا في كان بفوده

    من الزهر تاجاً باليواقيت رصعا

    By gone night brought in its folds

    A crown of flowers with jewels encrusted,

  15. قطعت بقطع منه كل تنوفة

    قد اتخذتها الفتخ مرعي ومرتعا

    It cut with pieces of it every covetous one

    Who'd made it prey and pasture.

  16. بأجرد لو كلفت سرعة سيره

    وشأو مداه البرق أطرق مهطعا

    With a swift, bare-footed steed whose pace

    Vied with lightning’s dash when it cracks.

  17. إلى حضرة المولى الذي نوى وجهه

    غنينا به عن مطلع البدر مطلعا

    To the Presence of the Master who intended His Face,

    Through Whom we're rich without the rising moon.

  18. كمال أولى العلم الشريف ومن به

    تشيد من ركن الهدى ما تصدعا

    Perfector of the noble science, and he through whom

    Firm pillars of guidance are erected.

  19. وبيت الفخار المحض ما شابه قذى

    صفا مشرباً للناظرين ومشرعا

    A house of sheer pottery that no filth soiled,

    Pure to behold, open.

  20. كريم كأن الجود باسط كفه

    فلم يثن من راحاته الدهر إصبعا

    Noble, as if generosity stretched out its palm,

    So time cannot fold back its fingers.

  21. وحيد العلا لو رام شفعا لوتره

    من الدهر يوماً لم يكن ليشفعا

    Singular sublime, had he wished intercession for his lute string

    From time one day, it would not intercede.

  22. سعى لطريف المجد بعد تليده

    فأدركه والندب يدرك ما سعى

    He hastened to gentle glory after wearing it out,

    So he attained it while the singer attains what he hastens to.

  23. ولم تر عيني قبله ذا براعة

    بأعذب منه في الخطاب وأبدعا

    My eyes never saw before him one so eloquent

    In sweeter, more wondrous speech.

  24. تروح الموالي كالموالي لأمره

    وتغدو لديه خضعا منه خشعا

    Goodwill comes to him as to a patron, and arises

    Before him humble, from him humbly.

  25. ومن عظم الله العلي تطوعا

    له عظمته العالمون تطوعا

    From magnifying God the Sublime spontaneously,

    Spontaneously the learned magnified him.

  26. تصون العلا أقلامه فكأنها

    فؤاد عليه ضم منهن أضلعا

    His pens protect the sublime, as though they were

    A heart that gathered them as ribs.

  27. ويرهب بالكتب الكتائب والذي

    أراع العدى منه اليراع وأجزعا

    With books he overawes armies, and he

    Before whom the bold and rash shuddered,

  28. إمام أشد العي إحصاء فضله

    أتطمع أن تحصى الغيوث وتجمعا

    An imam who surpasses counting his merit,

    Can you hope to count downpours and gather them?

  29. ففي أي علم لا يرى علما به

    وعن أي شيء لم يكن متورعا

    In what science does he not see himself learned,

    And from what thing has he not been abstinent?

  30. وفي أي درس لم يعد دارس الهدى

    كما كان مأهولا وقد صار بلقعا

    In what lesson wasn't he guidance's student,

    Once filled, now emptied?

  31. ومشكل بحث لا يحث بخايب ال

    إجابة تأصيلاً له وتفرعا

    What tangled inquiry whose perplexity he doesn't discuss

    To answer it fundamentally and branch it out?

  32. فيا خير من أعطى وأولى وحا

    ول المعالي فاستولى وقال فأسمعا

    O best of those who give, grant precedence and change,

    And attain the heights, so listen:

  33. تباعد عني الأقربون وصدني الص

    صديق وأسدى لي الزمان التفجعا

    My loved ones shunned me, and my bosom friend blocked me,

    And time brought me piecemeal calamity.

  34. ولم تضمر الحقد الممض ضمائري

    على من جنا إلا صفحت توجعا

    Nor did my innermost thoughts conceal

    Any rancor except I pardoned, pained.

  35. فإن كمال المرء ما بات مغضيا

    عن العيب عينا أو عن الفحش مسمعا

    For the epitome of man is spending the night

    Overlooking vice, or turning his hearing from lewdness.

  36. وإنك إن تجزي المسيء بفعله

    أضعت حقوق المجد من حيث ضيعا

    If you punish the sinner with his deed,

    You forfeit the rights of glory, once lost.

  37. ومن ذا الذي إن أنت وفيت عهده

    وفالك أو راعيت جانبه رعا

    Who is he whose pact, if you keep faithfully,

    Or guard his side, guards you?

  38. تروم صفاء من جبلة آجن

    وقد جبلت فيه الطبائع أربعا

    You aspire to purity from one of ignoble nature

    When innate dispositions have quadrupled in him?

  39. وترجو انتقال الود من قلب غادر

    وقد غلب المطبوع أن يتطبعا

    Or hope the affection shifts from a traitorous heart

    When ingrained nature has stamped itself?

  40. على ما تري الأيام تبدو لأهلها

    إذا أعتقت منها وضعاً عفت موضعا

    As you see, days appear to their folk,

    When they're over, a laid down code is neglected.

  41. سقي الصيب المنهل بالوبل نج

    لك الشهيد وأمري جانبيه وأمرعا

    The suckling's bowl with rubble and decay, not pure,

    Watered, is your martyr, and I command my tears' flow.

  42. ولو لم يشب مدرار سحب مدامعي

    نجيعُ دمي سقّيت مثواه أدمعا

    Had the bitterness of my pouring tears not aged,

    I'd have watered his burial place with blood.

  43. ولا برحت أكنافه روضة زها

    بها الزَهَرُ الزاكي الأريج تضوعا

    His precincts wouldn't cease being a meadow

    In which the fragrant brilliant flowers abound.

  44. فقدناه حبراً دونه البحر وارتدى

    رداء الردى مع فضله وتدرعا

    We lost an inkwell, beside whom the sea falls short,

    Who donned the raiment of decay with his surplus and armor.

  45. ولما ثوى في قدر خمسة أذرع

    شققنا به من شقة الصبر أدرُعا

    When he shrouded in a hollow of some five arm spans,

    We split apart a seam of patience with him.

  46. على الرغم منا أن نجيد رثاءه

    ولما نجد فيه المديح المسجعا

    Despite ourselves we compose his elegy

    When we find no harmonious praise for him.

  47. ولو دافعت من دونه البيض والقنا

    حكمنا بها قطعاً وبالسمر شرعا

    Had eggs and anklets warded him other than these,

    We'd have deemed them false, and glass prayer beads.

  48. على كل سرحوب كلجة مزبد

    تدفق في تياره وتدفعا

    Upon every starry night a complete darkness

    Streams in its current and pushes through.

  49. ولكنها الأقدار لم تخش جاسراً

    عليها ولا من جاءها متضرعا

    But Fate didn't fear one who dared it,

    Nor one who came to it pleading.

  50. عزاءً وإن عز العزاء بمثله

    وصبراً فإن الصبر يحسن موقعا

    Condolence, though condoling for his like's scarce found,

    And patience, as patience fits here.

  51. وفي خلف عوضته من شقيقه

    زواهرُ فضل تبهر الزُهر طلعا

    In succeeding him, his brother

    Gave blossoms of merit that dazzle blossoms.

  52. ومن كنت يا بن الأكرمين له أباً

    فلا غرو أن نال السماكين مُسرعا

    You whose father was most generous, no wonder

    You easily attained high ranks hurrying.

  53. فدم وابق كهفاً نستظل بظله

    وركناً منيعاً بالبقاء تمتعا

    So stay, O blood, as a cave we take shade under,

    And a firm pillar we possess.

  54. وهاك فوافٍ من قريحة متعب

    غدا من نيوب النائبات مروعا

    There, from a wearied talent is what occurs to me,

    Becoming, from the claws of disasters, alarmed.

  55. رمته يد البين المشتت أسهما

    ولم تبق منها في الحنية منزعا

    The hand of separation tossed its arrows,

    Leaving in my breast no escape.

  56. فأقصر عن مد القريض وقصره

    وطال عثاراً لا يقال لها لعا

    I fell short of extending this poem, and fell short,

    Stumbling long without it said I misspoke.

  57. ولكن دعاني منك مولى لنظمه

    ومن بدعه المولى بحبه لما دعا

    But the Master called me through you to compose it

    And when the Master innovates love, none refuses His call.
