لهف القلب واللهف غير مريح

بعد فقدي جمال عبد المسيح

The heart's longing does not bring comfort

After losing the beauty of Abd al-Masiḥ

غصن بانٍ ذوي وبدر من الأفق

هوى في ضمير قلب الضريح

A blossoming branch of family, and full moon from the horizon

Fell in love with the soul of the tomb's dweller

اودعوه الثرى فغاب وقد

اودع احشاي لاعج التبريح

They buried him in the ground and he disappeared after

Entrusting my insides with incessant farewell

ليت لو كان في فؤادي مثواه

ولو كنت ذا فؤاد جريح

If only his dwelling was in my heart

Even if I had a wounded heart

ولو اني فديته بقديم العمر مني

وبالحديث الصحيح

If only I redeemed him with my lifelong age

And with the authentic narration

اين من مدمعي عليه ونوحي

في نواحي البلاد طوفان نوح

Where are my tears for him and my wailing

In the lands' corners is the flood of Noah

ان اعش بعده فمن اعجب الأشياء

جسم يعيش من بعد روح

That I live after him is the strangest of things

A body living after its soul

خطب هذا المليح صور للنفس

قبيح الحتوف غير قبيح

This handsome one sought self-portraits

Ugly collector unlike the handsome

فتمنيت فيه موتي وقد ارخت

موتي به بموت المليح

So I wished in him my death after having prolonged

My death with the death of the handsome
