1. قد أحرز السبق مولانا الحريزي

    وهو الحري بفضل لا الحريريّ

    Molana Al-Huraizi has excelled,

    He deserves praise, not Al-Hariri.

  2. واحسن السبك في لفظ يطابقه

    عليه في طبقات الحمد سبكي

    His eloquence in words matches their meaning,

    Sibki praises him in categories of praise.

  3. وحل مشكل علم حل ذروته

    بمنطق اصله الدري دري

    He has solved the pinnacle of knowledge with logic,

    Whose origin is intuitive and evident.

  4. له بصيرة كاف في بديهته

    تعطيك ما قال بصري وكوفي

    His insight suffices due to his brilliance,

    Giving you what Basri and Kufi said.

  5. وكل معني غريب في الطروس له

    مغنى على كل ما يغنيك مبني

    Every strange meaning in poems has for him

    A melody built on whatever makes you sing.

  6. والعلم والحلم في حكم وفي حكطم

    فما ابن قيس وما المولى الجناني

    Knowledge and forbearance in his wisdom and restraint,

    He's beyond Ibn Qays and Molana Al-Jannani.

  7. والأصمعي إذا ما قيس منه به

    فهو الأصم وفي تركيبه عي

    When compared to him, Al-Asma'i,

    Seems deaf, though his diction is keen.

  8. اثنى علي بما يثني العزائم عن

    ادراكه وهو في مسراه علوي

    He praised me beyond what resolves aim to grasp,

    While he is in his lofty delight.

  9. شعر علا هامة الشعري وأشعرنا

    بما طواه عن الأوهام طائي

    His poetry ascended the pinnacle of poetry, and made us sense

    What it concealed from perceptions.

  10. اذكي واعطر من نشر الصبا سحراً

    كأنما شعره السحري شحري

    More blazing and fragrant than the scent of the morning breeze,

    As if his magical poetry is sorcery itself.

  11. حلا مذاقاً فلم يصفو الصفي لنا

    من بعد ورداً ولم يحل النباتي

    It excelled in taste, so Al-Safī did not purify for us

    A rose thereafter, nor did Al-Nabati distill.

  12. برقة قد غدا في حوز قبضتها

    الرقي طوعاً وبالطبع الحويزي

    Delicacy that dominates the palm of his hand,

    While silk yields to it naturally.

  13. يستوقف السمع إنساً من عذوبته

    ان مر في سمعه والسمع وحشي

    His sweetness arrests the hearing of man,

    If it passes the hearing of a wild beast.

  14. كأنما كل بيت من قصائده

    مثوى على وسمع الخلق شيعي

    Each verse of his poems

    Is a niche with the people's hearing yearning for it.

  15. قرظته بقريضي وهة يقرضني

    قوافياً لم ينلها قبل كندي

    I matched him with my counter rhyming,

    With rhymes that even Kindi did not attain before.

  16. كما تبرع ذو نعمى بمأكلة

    وحثه لقمةً منها الطفيلي

    As one blessed with bounty offers a meal,

    And urges the parasite to have a morsel from it.

  17. ولست أبلغ جزء من بلاغته

    إن القطاة ليعبيها القطامي

    I do not deliver a fraction of his eloquence,

    For even pebbles confound Al-Qatami.

  18. وان أتيت بمعنى من بدائعه

    فإن ذاك حديث عنه مروي

    If I came up with one of his amazing meanings,

    That is merely a narrative reported about him.

  19. وان توهمني أني اشابهه

    نظماً ونثراً فليس الأمر مخفي

    If you fancied that I resembled him,

    In prose or poetry, the matter is not hidden.

  20. قد يشبه الماء آل في تشكله

    وليس فيه لظمآن الحشاري

    Water may resemble the family in its shape,

    But it cannot quench the thirst of Al-Hashari.

  21. يا من يعري ويكسي من ملابسه

    إذا رآك بثوبيك المعري

    O you who strips and covers with his garments,

    When he sees you donning your stripping garments.

  22. وكان اول من قد قال ليس يفي

    بفص خاتمه هذا الفصيصي

    He was the first to say silk does not suffice,

    To line the gem of this jeweler.

  23. ومن فضائله ترضي الرضي وللرازي

    الأمام كلام فيه مرضي

    Among his virtues is pleasing Ar-Radi,

    And for Ar-Razi, he has satisfactory words.

  24. كفاك قرب الجناب الأحمدي

    علا فأنه الدهر محمود ومرعي

    It suffices you the proximity of the most excellent patron,

    He has transcended, so he is the duration’s praise and provident.

  25. والمرء من شرف الأقران مكتسب

    لولا التهامي لم يعلوك تيمي

    One earns the honor of peers,

    Had it not been for pretension, Taymi would not have elevated you.

  26. وهاك يا ناظم المجدين في نسق

    ذا دنيوي وهذا منك ديني

    One worldly, and this, from you, religious.

    A poem the thought of which illuminates

  27. منظومة بنت فكر ان اضاء له

    صبح المنى غاله بأس دجوجي

    The dawn of purpose, its importance formidable to Dujaji.

    From one whose heart hosts passion,

  28. من ذي فؤاد به المشوق مفتئد

    ومقلة دمعها النوحي نوحي

    And whose tearful eyelids lament.

    His eyelids find no rest one moment,

  29. لا يستقر له جفن على سنة

    كأنه فلكي الطرف فلكي

    As if celestial in glance, celestial.

    I complain of the humiliation of my love's yearning for a gazelle,

  30. اشكو هوان هوي ظبي عذرت به

    كأناصل غرامي فيه عذري

    As if my passion for it is my excuse.

    One of the misfortunes of my days I noticed,

  31. إحدى مصائب أيامي لواحظه

    كأنما هي سيفي وهو سيفي

    As if it is my sword, and he is my sword.

    How can I confine some of its incidents,

  32. وكيف أحصر بعضاً من حوادثها

    وكل ما تحدث الأيام كلي

    When all that the days relate is comprehensive?

    Patience, even if the taste of my patience is chaste for me,

  33. صبراً وان عفت من صبري مذاقته

    فما حمى عن صروف الدهر محمي

    No protector has protected against the turns of fate.

    Thawī Al-Ḥijāzī passed away wrongfully estranged,

  34. ثوي الحجازي مظلوماً بأسرته

    ولم يدم بعد مثواه العراقي

    And did not last in Iraq, his final abode.

    Fate is the same with us in its disposition—

  35. والدهر سيان منا في تصرفه الندب

    القريشي والنذل الزيادي

    The Qurayshi elegy and the base Ziyadi elegy.

    One of the mind’s follies is to be angered

  36. ومن سخافة عقل المرء تغضبه

    فيه المنايا وترضيه الأماني

    By demise, and pleased by wishes.

    I hope you blend my patchy poem with acceptance, for if

  37. عساك تمزج متنيها القبول فأن

    قبلتها فبها التركيب مزجي

    You accept it, the composition thereby gains integrity.

    The mind rarely accepts it disjointed,

  38. وقلما يرتضيها العقل شاردة

    ولو حباني بها فيك العقيلي

    Even if Al-‘Aqīlī gifted me with it whole.

    For you are from the sole to the earth,

  39. فأنت من اخمصاه في الثرى وله

    فوق الثريا لواء الحمد ملوي

    While above the earth, the banner of praise is folded for him.

    I have clung to a land and entrusted in it,

  40. قد اعتصمت بمصرٍ واؤتمنت بها

    فكل من في رشيد منك مهدي

    So all Rashīd’s decisions guide from you.

    No land disappoints when fertile

  41. وليس تخلف ارضا جزت مجدبةً

    بها سمي نبي اللَه وسمي

    It was named for Allah's prophet, and named for him.
