1. أمنيك يا قلبي وعز وصول

    وأدنيك يا خلي وقل خليل

    My wish, O my heart, is to reach and unite

    And to bring you closer, O friend, and say: My friend

  2. واصفيك يا دهري ودادي على القلى

    واسألك الجدوى وأنت بخيل

    And to describe you, O my time, and my affection on ember

    And to ask you for benefit while you are stingy

  3. وارضى على حكم الليالي فينثني

    حسامي طام والوشيج ضئيل

    And to accept the judgment of the nights that fold me

    My sword is blunt and the blade is weak

  4. واصبر نفسي وهو يهفو بها الهوى

    فتطفى وادنيها النقى فتميل

    And to be patient, my soul, as passion confuses it

    So it faints and purity inclines it

  5. وما أنا عن أمر يرام بعاجز

    ولا أنا في ضمن الكلام سؤل

    I cannot accomplish what is intended

    Nor am I skilled in speech

  6. ولا ارتضي أن اقتني لي معاشرا

    جبانا وان يحظى لدي جهول

    Nor do I agree to acquire for myself

    A cowardly fellowship, even if I am graced by ignorance

  7. وان مر بي ما يزدريني وجدتني

    على صائل الأعداء كيف أصول

    And if one who scorns me passes by, I stand

    Against the attackers of enemies, how I charge

  8. وبعض بني دهري كثيرون مجمعا

    لأمن وفي يوم الزحام قليل

    Some of the people of my time gather

    For safety, yet on the day of crowds they are few

  9. طلابي لما يرضى المعالي أحلني

    بأضيق ما فيه السقيم يحول

    My request when glory pleases is to allow me

    The narrowest space where the sick can turn

  10. وخوفي على المجد الأثيل أضاعني

    بأرض بها أم الوفاء هبيل

    My fear for the eternal glory made me lose

    A land in which the mother of loyalty is barren

  11. تذكرت عيشي بالعواصم فانبرت

    بتذكارها لي غصة وغليل

    I remembered my life in the capitals, so I set out

    With its memory, an anguish and agony for me

  12. وحاولت من أرجائها أرج الصبا

    فمر كما عاد العليل عليل

    And I sought from its edges the scent of youth

    But it passed as the invalid passes, an invalid

  13. رعى اللَه أحبابي الألى ما ذكرتهم

    يساء عذور أو يسر عذول

    May God protect my dear beloved ones when I remember them

    Evil suspicion or easy forgiveness

  14. محلهم بين الضلوع إلى الحشا

    وهم بأثيلات الغوير حلول

    Their abode is between my ribs to the grave

    They are the best of faraway lands

  15. نؤمل لو صافحت ترب ربوعهم

    بجفني وآمال الرجال تجول

    We hope that if the soil of their lands

    Touched my eyelids and hopes of men roamed

  16. وأخضع المرائين منها مفاوزا

    كأني وأحبابي بهن نزول

    And I humbled the arrogant among them

    As if I and my loved ones descended upon them

  17. واستعطف البرق اليماني هل الى

    تحمل اشواقي لهن سبيل

    And I appealed to the Yemeni lightning, can it

    Carry my longing to them, is there a way?

  18. فقد خاب صب ما درى بغرامه

    حبيب ولم يبلغ جواه رسول

    For the lover whose passion was disappointed and his

    Messenger did not deliver his message was unlucky

  19. وعاتبة غضبي تقول رضيت ان

    تعيش خمولاً والجبان خمول

    And my angry reproach says: You were content to

    Live in languor while the coward is languid

  20. علام تركت الحزم إنك عاجز

    لقد عز عندي أن يقال ذليل

    Why did you abandon resolve? You are helpless

    It is shameful to say: I am disgraced

  21. هلم لم يدنى المنايا أو المنى

    ودع سبب التفكير فهو طويل

    Neither has death approached or purpose

    Leave the cause of thinking for it is long

  22. ولا بد من حتف فسيان للفتى

    أمات بداء أم فراه صقيل

    Death is inevitable, the same for the youth

    Whether disease ended him or a sword slew him

  23. ولا عار إن أمسيت بالأمس قائلا

    إذا أنت في يوم عليك قتيل

    No shame if yesterday I said:

    When your day comes you too will be killed

  24. فقلت لها لا فضَّ فوكِ وإنما

    هو الدهر للحر الكريم خذول

    So I said to it: Do not rave, for

    Time is unfair to the noble and generous

  25. ولا بدلي ان شاء مولاي غارة

    تصيخ لها اعداؤنا وتقول

    I must, if my Master wills, make a raid

    That will terrify our enemies and make them recoil

  26. تسير بليل من فتام تمده

    فيشرق فيها كالنجوم نصول

    Travel by night, extend by dawn

    So it shines in it like ascending stars

  27. بها اقتضى يا بثن ما ترتضيه لي

    والا قضيت النحب وهوجميل

    With it take, O spots, what you deem right for me

    Otherwise I will shoot the arrow and it is beautiful

  28. وليلٍ كيوم البين بل كزمانه

    اتصالاً علينا لا يكاد يزول

    A night like the day of separation, rather like its era

    Joined upon us, it almost does not pass

  29. لقينا به الظلماء وهي جحافل

    وخضنا به البيداء وهي سيول

    We met the darkness and it was armies

    And we waded the desert and it was floods

  30. وسرنا نزجي الأرحبيات ليلنا

    على عجل والمستضام عجول

    We walked leading the she-camels at night

    In haste and the wronged are rash

  31. فلاح لنا من غرة عربية

    ضياء إلى الصبح المنير دليل

    A light shone upon us from an Arab woman’s face

    Guiding us to the shining dawn, a guide

  32. إلى الماجد الندب ابن سيفا الذي لنا

    بناديه إن عز المقيل مقيل

    To the eminent call of Ibn Saifan, who

    With his voice, if the honored are honored

  33. إلى ابن عليّ ذي الأيادي محمد

    ونعم جليل قد تلاه جليل

    To the son of Ali, of generous hands, Muhammad

    And an excellent successor succeeded an excellent predecessor

  34. كريم وأيدي السحب غير سواكب

    حليم عن الجاني المسيء حمول

    Generous, your hands are like stars not clouds

    Clement to the sinful evil-doer, patient

  35. محط رحال الوفد اما رحابه

    فساح واما ظله فظليل

    The destination of delegations, your courtyard is

    Spacious and your shade is shady

  36. مهاب اطاع الله حتى اطاعه

    من الخلق مرهوب الجناب مهول

    Awe-inspiring, obeying God until

    The people fearfully obey you, with an awe-inspiring aura

  37. تجلبب جلبابا من النصر ضافيا

    تمد له فوق السماك ذيول

    Wearing a cloak of victory, sheltering

    Its fringes flowing above the sky

  38. وقام بأعباء الأمور فسهلت

    لديه حزون العيش فهي سهول

    Bearing the burdens of affairs, so

    The sorrows of life became easy for him

  39. وجدد رسم الجود بعد اندراسه

    إذ الجود ربعاً كان فهو طلول

    Renewing the custom of generosity after its decline

    For generosity was a wasteland, and he is making it flourish

  40. لقد شرفت شهباؤنا بقدومه

    كما شرف البيت العتيق رسول

    Our stars were ennobled by his arrival

    As the ancient house was ennobled by the Messenger

  41. فلا برحت مشمولة بقبوله

    متى ما نهادي شمأل وقبول

    Thus we remain included in his acceptance

    Whenever we seek union and acceptance

  42. من القوم في البأساء شبان معشر

    وعند النهى والاختبار كهول

    A company of youths among the people in afflictions

    And mature in prohibition and ordeal

  43. اضاعوا الدنا حفظاً لطارف مجدهم

    وتالده استولت عليه عقول

    They lost the world preserving the edges of their glory

    And their high ambition captured their minds

  44. هم القوم ما اعراضهم بمدالة

    ولا مالهم يلفي عليه وكيل

    They are the people whom turning away does not touch

    Nor are they preoccupied with a caretaker of wealth

  45. سليل المعالي والكرام وابن من

    لمصرعه في الخافقين عويل

    The son of glory, generosity, and he whose

    Death the cosmic spheres lamented

  46. ابنك آمالي لديك كثيرة

    وأنت على نجح المراد كفيل

    Your son, my hopes in you are many

    And you are capable of fulfilling the purpose

  47. وانهيك ان الدهر قد يستخفني

    فأن مال نحوي مال وهو ثقيل

    I implore you, time may deceive me

    So it leans toward me, heavy

  48. وأرضيك في الحالين أني مذنب

    وأنك عثرات المسيء تقبل

    And I please you in both cases: that I am guilty

    And you accept the stumbles of the wrongdoer

  49. وأرضاك لي مولى مد الدهر مالكا

    وما أنا عن هذا المقام ملول

    And that you are pleased with me, my Master extending time

    And I am not weary of this position

  50. فدم في رغيد العيش دهراً ظلامه

    عليك صباح والهجير أصيل

    So live in comfortable life, its darkness upon you

    Is morning, and separation is connection

  51. ولا زلت ترقى رتبة بعد رتبة

    لها غرر تهدي الورى وحجول

    You continue rising in rank, rank after rank

    With treasures that guide the world and ignorance

  52. محلى من الرحمن أفخر حلة

    تنير محيا والأكف تنيل

    My status from the Merciful is the most prideworthy state

    That illuminates my forehead and the palms pour

  53. مدى الدهر كالعضب اليماني رونقا

    سليم الشبا لا يعتر به فلول

    The duration of time, like Yemeni aloeswood, elegance

    Pure white that no defects touch
