إنا لتقتلنا العيون

ونرد ما طبع القيون

Our eyes are killed by you

And we reject what fate has decreed

ولنا المعزة في الحروب

وفي الهوى ذل وهون

And we have pride in wars

And in love, humiliation and disgrace

ولنا المكارم والصوارم

في ندى ووغي تدين

And we have generosity and sharp swords

In softness and firmness we believe

ولنا المعاني الغر ابكار

وللشعراء عون

And we have rare, wonderful meanings

And for poets, help

وبنا قوافيها قوى

فيها لمنتقد كمين

And through us its rhymes are strengthened

In which for the critic there is an ambush

وبنا تقاد إلى مقارعة

العدا الحرب الزبون

And through us it leads to the confrontation

Of enemies, wars of aggression

ونوائب الأيام اعذبها

لأنفسنا المنون

And the sweetest times of days

Are for ourselves, the devoted

والصعب غير فراق من

تهواه في الدنيا يهون

And what is hard other than parting with

The one you love in life is disgraced

ان الجزيرة لا عدا

جوديها الجود الهتون

That Al Jazira has no enemies

Its generosity is reckless generosity

خلقوا بها آبائي آساد

الشرى وهي العرين

My forefathers created in it lions

Of evil, and it is the lair

ولهم بها البيت المؤثل

في قواعده المكين

And they have in it the eminent house

On its firm foundations

وبركنه المجد المتين

وظله الجد المبين

And its pillar of lasting glory

And its shadow of clear nobility

وبهم لنا نسب على الدنيا

له شرف ودين

And through them we have a lineage in life

That has honor and faith

ولو فدنا العرض المذل

وعندنا العرض المصون

And if we forfeit our violated honor

We have our protected honor

ولضيفنا تعلو القدور

وتنحر الكوم الأمون

And for our guest the pots are plenty

And the reserved sheep are slaughtered

لا تستقر على المهاد

لنا ضلوع لو جفون

Do not settle on the pillows

For us ribs even if eyelids sleep

وهدونا فوق الجياد يرى

وان قلق الوضين

And they guided us above the steeds one sees

Even if the buttresses tremble

ان الكرام إلى ظهور

الخيل تدفعها البطون

That the generous up to the appearance

Of horses they push with abdomens

ونجابة النجباء اسرع

ما يشب بها الجنين

And the courage of the courageous faster

Than what matures in the fetus

وإذا رأيت الحي تقصده

الركائب والظمون

And if you see the alive ones intend it

The riders and the structures

وتجاهك البيت الرحيب

فناؤه السهل الحصين

And facing you the wide house

Its yard fortified and easy

متشرع الجنبات طال

عموده الصلب الرزين

With prominent pillars long

Its sturdy, firm pole

ولديه اغلمة تهش

لقاصديه وتستكين

And near it are dark-colored horses

Whinnying, grunting and bay

وبجانبيه صواهل

وهواجل حمر وجون

And behind it mares galloping

And for the singers it is protected

ووراءه شوس تصول

وللذمار به تصون

And with its fasting, steadfast chest pillars

Strong, no weak pillars

وبصدره الصامي عمادي

هجان لا هجين

So descend with the judgment of loyalty

For you are entrusted, trusted

فانزل على حكم الوفاء

فأنت مكلو أمين

And judge as you choose in

His money and I guarantee

واحكم بما تختار في

أمواله وأنا الضمين

So be generous with it if you will

Instead of it, complete and delight

فجدوا به في أن تكون

مكانه كافه ونون

And the protection of the Kurds refuses

That there be among them any grudge

وحمية الأكراد تأبى

أن يكون بهم ضنين

Rise, those people and the like

To his people, good company

قومي أولئك والقرين

لقومه نعم القرين

And my clan and his next of kin

And he who supports and helps

وعشيرتي والأقربون

ومن يعيل ومن يعين

And the affectionate family

None of them by oath swears falsely

والأسرة الموفون

ما منهم يمينا من يمين

So if my grandfather departs from them

Suspicions have gone bad indeed

فلئن ترحل عنهم جدى

فقد ساءت ظنون

And for long I have seen whom

His right hand has tempted

ولطالما أبصرت من

عبثت بيسراه اليمين

And we accept the trusted

Who defends his reluctance, the trustee

ولقبلنا المأمون

دافع عن تخلفه الأمين

And I have heard of the two brothers how

Fate's judgments came between them

وسمعت بالأخوين كيف

تحكم الدهر الخؤون

Until one brother destroyed the other

And in both of them judgment was firm

حتى أباد أخ أخاه

وفيهما حلم رصين

And one of us in his emulation

Of Joseph seeks aid

والمرء منا في تأسيه

بيوسف يستعين

And for us in Cain and his killing his brother

Unjustly, certainty we gain

ولنا بقابيل وقتل أخيه

مظلوما يقين

And I read from the pages of events

What makes the centuries grow old

وقرأت من صحف الحوادث

ما تشيب له القرون

And I knew that fate is harsh

The womb never gentle

وعلمت ان الدهر قاس

العريكة لا يلين

And its sons never pure, for in

Their makeup is water and clay

وبنوه لا تصفو وفي

تكوينهم ماء وطين

Do we blame the days for what is between us

If corrupted among

افنعتب الأيام فيما بيننا

ان عاث بين

And it wants if the sound calmed

Therewith though the sorrowful sighed

ويود لو هدأ السليم

بها ولو هجع الحزين

And for us in each model

And in each of us the hidden disease

ولنا بكل اسوة

وبكلنا الداء الدفين

And for each with eyelids, motes

And for each with a heart, sorrows

ولكل ذي جفن قذى

ولكل ذي قلب شجون

And for our close relatives

It decides with the injustice of debts

وعلى ذوي القربى لنا

تقضى بمظلمة ديون

No! I with loyalty

And with affection for them stand surety

كلا واني بالوفاء

وبالوداد لهم قمين

And patience accompanies you, my cheek

Even if patience is far from you

والحلم يصحبك الخدين

وان نأى عنك الخدين

I swear by my Jesus whose request

Is feelings and yearnings

قسماً بمزجي العيس مطلبه

المشاعر والحجون

It overflows upon the family of Hijr

As the ships overflow

تطفو على آل الهجير

ضحى كما تطفو السفين

And indeed emaciation has possessed it

Secretly, and longing hid it

ولقد تملكها النحول

سرى واخفاها الحنين

So it is as if the desert while in it

Is clear yet unclear

فكأنما البيداء وهي

بها تبين ولا تبين

Its covering is a line that appears

And each letter of it is delight

طرس به اسطر يلوح

وكل حرف منه نون

If my dwelling were not in Shabwa

Of the capitals and tranquility

لو لم يكن سكنى بشهباء

العواصم والسكون

And the towering of its scent above

The meadow of its jasmine

وسمو جوشنها على

روض جناه الياسمين

It and its gardens would be verdant

In which are the branches

فكأنها ورياضها مخضرة

فيها الغصون

A face the line of the adornment appeared through it

And its scent, its forehead

وجه بدا خط العذار

به وجوشنها جبين

And its soft, sweet spring

Your fill, the soft sweet spring

وقويقها العذب المعين

وحسبك العذب المعين

Flowing like the cord

Except that it is a cord of skin

ينساب مثل الأيم

الا انه أيم لجين

And the salvation of my heart from my hands

Its calmness cannot be

وخلاص قلبي من يدي

آرامها ما لا يكون

And the eye from the injustice of time

Except our loved ones, hot

والطرف من جور الزمان

عدا احبتنا سخين

And I came to my people and Al Jazira

No citadels match it

وافيت قومي والجزيرة

لا تماثلها الحصون

And I settled in their land and in

Their neighborhood the goat grazes

وقطنت ارضهم وعند

جوارهم يرعى القطين

And I tasted in prosperity the garb

Of misery, and prosperity adorns

ونضوت بالنعمى لباس

البؤس والنعمى تزين

So the woes of life and the goodness

Of its comfort each at a time

فشدائد الدنيا وطيب

رخائها حين وحين
