ما عَلَى العُذّالِ مِنْ سَقَمِي

ما عَلَى العُذّالِ مِنْ سَقَمِي

أَبِجِسْمِي ذاكَ أَمْ بهِمِ

أَبِجِسْمِي ذاكَ أَمْ بهِمِ

What claim do the reproachers have against me because of my sickness?

Is that sickness in my body, or in theirs?

لائِمِي فِي الْحُبِّ وَيْحَكَ لَوْ

لائِمِي فِي الْحُبِّ وَيْحَكَ لَوْ

ذُقْتَ طَعْمَ الْحُبِّ لَمْ تَلُمِ

ذُقْتَ طَعْمَ الْحُبِّ لَمْ تَلُمِ

You who blame me for loving—alas for you! Had you

tasted love’s savor, you would not blame me.

هَلْ تُرِيحُ الْجَفْنَ مِنْ سَهَرٍ

هَلْ تُرِيحُ الْجَفْنَ مِنْ سَهَرٍ

أَمْ تُداوِي الْقَلْبَ مِنْ أَلَمِ

أَمْ تُداوِي الْقَلْبَ مِنْ أَلَمِ

Can you grant the eyelid rest from sleeplessness,

or heal the heart of pain?
