لقَدْ سَجَعَتْ في جُنْحِ لَيْلٍ حَمامةٌ
فَأَيَّ أسىً هَاجَتْ على الهائِمِ الصَّبِّ
A dove cooed softly in the wings of night,
What sorrow stirred in the weary soul?
لَكِ الويلُ كمْ هَيَّجْتِ شَجْوي بِلَا جَوىً
وَشكوَى بِلا شَكوى وَكَرْباً بِلَا كَرْبِ
Woe to you, how you roused my ache without solace,
My plaint without plaint, and grief without grief,
وأَسْكبْتِ دَمْعاً مِنْ جُفُونِ مُسَهَّدٍ
وَمَا رَقْرَقَتْ مِنْكِ المَدَامِعُ بِالسَّكبِ
And drew tears from heavy-lidded eyes,
Yet your tears streamed not forth in floods.
