1. قَلبي رَهينٌ بينَ أَضلاعي

    مِن بينِ إيناسٍ وإِطْماعِ

    My heart is captive within my ribs

    Among hopes and desires

  2. مِن حَيْثُ ما يَدعوهُ داعي الهوى

    أجابَهُ لَبَّيْكَ مِن داعِ

    It answered the caller of passion “Here I am”

    From wherever it calls

  3. مَن لسَقيمٍ ما لهُ عائدٌ

    وميِّتٍ ليس له ناعي

    Who can help a hopeless sick man

    Or a dead man with no mourner

  4. لمَّا رأَتْ عاذِلَتي ما رأَتْ

    وكانَ لي مِن سَمْعِها واعي

    When my critic saw what she saw

    And my hearing took it all in

  5. قالت ولم تقصِدْ لِقِيلِ الخنى

    مَهْلاً لقد أَبلغْتَ أَسْماعي

    She said, without intending insult

    “Enough! You have overdone it, my hearing can take no more."
