أمّا الخليطُ فشدَّ ما ذهبوا

بانوا ولم يَقْضوا الذي يجِبُ

The mixed army went so far away,

They left but did not fulfill what was required,

فالدَّارُ بعدَهمُ كوشمِ يدٍ

يا دارُ فيكِ وفيهمُ العجبُ

So the house after them is like a tattoo on a hand,

O house! In you and them is wonder!

أين التي صيغتْ محاسِنُها

من فضَّةٍ شِيبتْ بها ذهبُ

Where is she whose beauty was molded

From silver turned gray by gold?

ولَّى الشبابُ فقلتُ أندبُه

لا مثلَ ما قالوا ولا نَدَبوا

Youth has passed so I said I would mourn it

Not like what they said nor how they mourned.

دِمَنٌ عفَتْ ومحا مَعالِمَها

هطِلٌ أجشُّ وبارحٌ تَرِبُ

A home is in ruins and its features erased

A pouring rain, barren land, and accumulated debris.
