In the name of Allah we begin and end,

And with His name speech is opened.

O seeker of knowledge, it is the curriculum,

Many aberrations have proliferated without it.

    Every science has techniques,

    And every art has springs.

The first of them are the pillars of rhetoric,

And the origin is knowing the language.

    For in metaphor and interpretation,

The legends of rational minds have gone astray.

    Until you know those structures,

    Singular, plural, and dual.

You seek whichever science you wish,

    Whether prose or verse.

So cure the disease of poetry,

    With prosody and correct language.

    Neither did Galenus philosophize,

Nor the author of the Canon, Ptolemy.

    Nor he called Hermes,

Nor the author of Arcana and Euclid.

It was the philosophy of Al-Khalil in prosody,

In the sound and faulty poetry.

I have examined it and summarized,

    A precise, concise system.

A summary suffices for the whole.

This summarizes the chapters of my discourse,

And after it I will exemplify.

First - and God I ask for aid -

Is to know vowels and consonants,

Of all that appears on the tongue,

    Not all written by hands.

    Gemination appears heavy

Counted as two letters in detail.

    A consonant then a vowel

Like the nun in kunna and kurraka.

Then come the feet and pillars

For our words they are foundations.

    The light foot when counted

Is a vowel and consonant, no more.

    The heavy foot in explanation

    Is two vowels without nunation.

    The separated and joined pillars

Have inhibited stuffing in their innards.

    But they allow imperfection

At the beginning, end, and separation.

    So the joined pillar, understand,

Is two vowels before a quiescent consonant.

The separated pillar of the two

Is a quiescent between two vowels.

So these are the pillars and feet

For them there is permanence and caducity.

    But imperfection is allowed

Only in the beginning, end, and separation.

    So the beginning when imperfect

Is called the beginning, all of it.

The end of the verse is called the end,

It has no story in the stuffing.

And all that enters the scansion

    Of imperfection allowed in poetry

    Is named separation by that,

    Though few know it there.

    Elisions in verse beginnings

Are known by names and attributes.

Omitting a letter from the numbers’ beginnings

In each hemistich split from a pillar.

    Five hemistichs of the hemistichs

    Have the first letters elided.

Among them is the long, the first of spheres,

And longest construction for the poet.

    Elision enters it, called catalexis,

If followed by syncopation, it's called acatalexis.

    Al-waafir, which revolves the second

Upon it - an attentive ear comprehends -

    Elision enters its beginning

In the first part of the parts.

    It is called lame, whenever

    Syncopation follows, it's called halt.

    If it's lame then syncopated,

    That's the example, not unknown.

    Al-hazaj, which is the bracelet

    Revolving the third upon it.

    Elision enters it, called limping,

It is ugly, know and understand.

    Until, when following the elision

You call it mutilated, when you name it.

    Al-ashtar, the hybrid verse,

    Whose last part is syncopated.

This, and nothing else, can freely

    Enter hemistichs and any rhyme.

    And the allowed impairments altogether

Have no place in the stuffing.

    Three are called beginning,

Separation, and end in the parts.

    Enjambment is outside their shape

    Its action contrasts with theirs.

    For they left conformity

And truncation and completeness are allowed in it.

The like of this is allowed in stuffing

    Not like meter, hear me.

Every impaired in scansion and ode and rajaz

Is not allowed in stuffing or verse.

    But Al-Khalil allowed it

    Gambling when evidence failed him.

Every living creature of Eve's children

    Is not immune from mistakes.

So the verse's beginning, if impaired,

    Is wholly named the beginning.

The verse's end is called the end,

It has no story in the stuffing.

    All that enters the scansion

    Of allowed impairment in poetry

    Is named separation by that,

    Though few know it there.

    And enjambment between verses

    In corresponding hemisitichs

Neither is wholly omitted in poetry

For that is the most metrical rupture.

    They remain whichever permanence

    And that is verses' completeness.

    If one loses regularity

    The other inevitably compensates.

So all preceded by what's before it

Is named onset, understand its origin.

All followed by what's after it

Is called coda, so count it.

    If both correspond,

    It is rightly called extremes.

It enters the madiid and khafif

    And segmented ramal and mahdhuf.

    It also enters altogether mujtath

And only occurs in the four.

    The part devoid of enjambment

    Is innocent, not a lie.

    Measure it likewise for correspondence

    Not like synchronization.

For it's not from two parts

    In adjacent feet.

    Rather, in one part

At the first of the ode.

    The two feet unswayed

    In its part or unharmed.

If the latter is omitted in its place

Hear my words and understand its meaning.

    So is synchronization described

And all known in its hemistich.

It enters the first part of mudhari

    Then the coda of muqtadeb.

    Then extras on the parts

    Are found, known by names.

    They only occur at ends

    Added to verse conclusions.

    All found in its hemistich

    Like the adorned, which adds

Two letters to the segment's regularity

A vowel and consonant in its vicinity.

That is in what swaying is not allowed

    Or deemed metrically weak.

In it also enters the fattened,

    Restricted in all said.

    It adds one quiescent letter

    Unlike the segment's regularity.

The deluged is like it, of these impairments,

A letter added to the ramal hemistich.

If you see the segment went not

With reduction, it is intact, so hear.

    If reduction omitted it,

    Understand, my words show you.

    That's called segmented in halves

If you omit two parts from them.

The verse, if you omit its hemistich,

Is called mutilated, understand its matter.

If after the hemistich you omit

A correct part from the coda,

And what remains is two parts,

    That's called eroded, not inclined.

So hear, this describes the spheres,

    An expert's description of prosody.

Spheres you know in the minds of experts

Five, marked with lines and rings.

    The lines' indications

    Are signs for the consonants.

    The hollow rings

    Indicate the vowels.

    The dots on the lines

    Indicate omissions.

    The ring dotted on

    Sometimes is consonant, sometimes omitted.

The dots in the rings' hollows

    Pierce the hemistichs' beginnings.

See, beneath them are their names

    Written opposite them.

    The two dots show enjambment

    Likewise synchronization's position.

    This is each one's picture

And meaning - interpret it individually.

The first is the long verse's sphere,

    Eight, for those of merit.

    The hemistich divided in quatrains

    Between five and seven letters.

    Its letters twenty after four

    Each letter's position clarified.

    Five hemistichs detach from it

    Separated by scansion and rhythm.

Among them, long and madid after it,

Then basit, they decree its order.

Three the Arabs constructed upon it

And two they turned from and spurned.

This is its picture, as you see,

    Its mention, explained and interpreted.

    This second particularized

With the heavy foot and diminished.

    Its parts are three, septenary,

    They disliked making it quaternary.

For it departs from their measure

Among the metrical poetry of their compositions.

    It's twenty letters after one

    Of surplus letters it contains.

The waafir and kaamil detach from it,

With a third the ignorant struggles.

This is its picture, made clear

Adorned with its threads and beads.

    The third sphere told of

    Its parts and letters

    Not heavy and light feet

Like what preceded from that, truly no doubt.

    The likes of what detach

    From that detach indeed.

    From its brocade emerge

    Hazaj, rajaz, and ramal.

    This is its picture, explained,

    Embellished with its adornments.

    The spheres' fourth, narrated,

    Its parts three, counted.

Wondrous, the description struggles with it,

    Twenty letters, count and letter.

    The likes of the predecessor

Though its shape differs from its shape.

    Marvelous, precise in its devising

With the separated pillar in its hemistichs.

    Six detach from it, stated,

    Three unknown among them.

    Each of these six hemistichs

    Known to its masters, concealed.

    First, it's saree', then munsarih,

    Then khafif, then clear.

    After it, mudhaari' and muqtadeb,

Two segmented hemistichs in Arabic verse.

After them, mujtath, the sweetest hemistich,

    Occurs segmented for poetry's people.

After them the fifth of spheres

    For the late muutaqaarib.

From it a hemistich detaches, and a hemistich -

No mention of it came in poetry.

Among the briefest parts and hemistichs,

    Its letters twenty in scansion.

    The hemistich composed on clauses

    Four evenly spaced.

    This the tester has tried

Of all the Arabs said upon it.

Anything they did not say upon

    We did not consider it.

We say nothing but what they said

    For our speech contradicts it.

If differing from it were allowed in verses

It would be allowed in language.

    Al-Khalil allowed that

But I don't say what he says.

    For he contradicted its meaning

And the sword shines though flawed.

He made the early view original

Then allowed this, though not its like.

    The scholar may slip

And the ink may betray the scribe.

To Al-Khalil there is no peer

In all that comes of matters.

But in it he is unprecedented,

None before or after like him.

So praise be to Allah for His blessings,
