No wonder if illness and harm befall you,

The sun itself may be eclipsed, let alone the moon.

O you, whose waning moon-like beauty is fading,

My hearing and sight are sacrificed for your light.

If your body is afflicted with some ailment,

So the sturdy pillars are shaken down.

You are the sword, if its strokes fail to hit,

It is still not what the sharp blade fails to do.

A spirit of glory in a revered body,

As though the dawn were bursting through his cheeks.

Had anything made it suffer save destiny,

I would denounce that, but destiny made it suffer.
