I am content in this life with food and clothing,
And a cup of water though the cup be cracked.
So say to the masters of the world, take away whatever you wish,
Turn your backs and leave me be, from afar I watch.
For the kingdom of this world, take away its taxes
To its master, nor that commander adorned.
I live more happily than you, if only you knew,
But the greedy man is blind to this.
